Nolan; Morkel Advance in Doubles Play at Big South Fall Invitational

CLINTON, S.C. – Oli Nolan and Charlie Morkel of UNC Asheville's men's tennis team advanced to the doubles quarterfinals during the first day of action, Friday, at the Big South Invitational, hosted by Presbyterian.

The Bulldog duo found themselves in a close battle, but were able to take down Raphel Calzi and Gustave Lustkins from Campbell, 8-6. They will face off against Maxwell Benson and Daniel Stenger Valdes of Presbyterian, 8:30 a.m., Saturday.

Morkel also was the only Bulldog to win his singles matchup in the main draw round of 32, defeating Fayzullokhon Mavylyudov of Hampton, 6-1, 6-3. He ended up across the net from Calzi for the second time on the day, this time in the round of 16, but Calzi emerged victorious in singles play, 6-1, 6-3.

Nolan, Finlay Ray McFadyen and Leo Bierbaum all fell in their opening round singles bids, but will resume play tomorrow in the back draw, set to begin at 10 a.m.
