UNC Asheville to Take Part in Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley College of Charleston Invitational This Weekend

CHARLESTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville will next play three matches in the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley College of Charleston Invitational.

UNC Asheville (3-3) will open the tournament by facing host College of Charleston of the Colonial Athletic Association at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. The next day, UNC Asheville will open its Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Davidson of the Atlantic 10. The Bulldogs will close out the tournament by battling The Citadel for the second time in the 2018 season at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.

BULLDOG BITES

Bulldogs in the Big South Statistics

UNC Asheville volleyball is at the top or near the top in numerous statistical categories in the Big South. The Bulldogs are currently leading the league in home attendance with an average of 562 fans per game and UNC Asheville is second in the league in hitting percentage (.233).

Individually, Cara Guthrie leads the Big South in kills (3.60) and points (4.35) per set. Julia Borges is currently sixth (.267) in the league in hitting percentage, while Guthrie is 10th (.234) in hitting percentage. Kailey Hackett is presently eighth in the league in assists per set (5.55). Guthrie is fourth in the league in aces per set (0.55). UNC Asheville's Cecilia Stack (third – 1.10) and Julia Loveday (sixth – 0.90) are both in the top-10 in the league in blocks per set. UNC Asheville's Madisen Zyburt is seventh (3.95) in the league in digs per set.

Guthrie Named to Chattanooga Classic All-Tournament Team
Cara Guthrie closed out her efforts last weekend as a member of the Chattanooga Classic All-Tournament Team. She was named the Big South Player of the Week and to the All-Tournament Team one weekend before as well after her performance in the UNC Asheville Invitational.

Guthrie ended UNC Asheville's three matches in the Chattanooga Classic averaging 3.55 kills and 1.55 digs per set. The senior outside hitter from Jupiter, Fla. ended the Chattanooga Classic with 39 kills and 17 digs overall. She collected double-digit kills in all three matches in the tournament for the Bulldogs.

Guthrie Nearing 1,000 Kills
Cara Guthrie is nearing becoming the latest member of UNC Asheville's 1,000-kill club. Guthrie ended the Chattanooga Classic with 982 kills in her career.

Over 1,000 Assists
With her team-best 22 assists in the win over Tennessee State, UNC Asheville's Carter Kennedy surpassed 1,000 assists. She now has 1,018 in her Bulldog career.

Kennedy is one of two Bulldogs currently on the 2018 roster with over 1,000 assists. Kailey Hackett passed the 1,000 assist mark in UNC Asheville's regular season-closing 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-20) home win over Liberty at the Justice Center on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Digging It
After her 24 digs in the win over Tennessee State, Madisen Zyburt now has four 20 or more dig performances in four-set matches in her Bulldog career. Zyburt enters the upcoming weekend with 931 digs in her career.

"I think we want to keep improving," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos noted of the upcoming weekend. "I think this past weekend we had a good mix in the lineup and we got some good looks at different people, but I think we want to keep building continuity. We want to keep playing better and hopefully this weekend we can tighten things up a little bit."

About College of Charleston
The College of Charleston welcomes the Bulldogs to their home facility owning a 3-4 overall record on the season. The Cougars have picked up wins this season over Missouri State, Western Kentucky and SC State. College of Charleston was picked second in the Colonial Athletic Association preseason poll.

About Davidson
The Wildcats enter the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley College of Charleston Invitational with an overall record of 4-3 on the season. Davidson has wins over Marist, William & Mary, Charlotte and Mississippi State. The Wildcats were predicted to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll. 

About The Citadel
This will be the second meeting of the year between UNC Asheville and The Citadel, who is now 4-3 on the year with wins over Coppin State, Bethune-Cookman, Saint Peter's and Savannah State.

The UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) win over The Citadel in its second match of the Asheville Invitational at the Justice Center on Saturday, Aug. 25.

As a team, UNC Asheville finished the match hitting an impressive .359 as a team, while limiting The Citadel to a hitting percentage of .181.

Cara Guthrie led Asheville in kills in the match with 11. She had a hitting percentage of .381 in the match. Guthrie also had three digs and two service aces. Julia Borges just missed on double-digit kills with nine, while Ansley Rooks hit .583 en route to eight kills.

Madisen Zyburt finished the Asheville win with a match-high 13 digs. Kailey Hackett led Asheville with 15 assists with Carter Kennedy right behind with 13. As a team, UNC Asheville collected six service aces. The Bulldogs had six total team blocks with Cecilia Stack ending her efforts in the match with five blocks. She also had five kills. 

Sharlissa De Jesus was the top performer for The Citadel in the match with 14 kills. Megan Fuhr had 26 assists for The Citadel.

Up Next
UNC Asheville will play its final non-conference regular season match of the year at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when the Bulldogs play host to mountain rival Western Carolina.

Since making the move to NCAA Division I, UNC Asheville owns a 23-17 advantage over the Catamounts. Last time the two met at the Justice Center on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, UNC Asheville picked up an emphatic 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-19) win over the Catamounts.
