Mock Reveals 2018-19 Women’s Basketball Non-Conference Schedule
09.05.2018 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick revealed the non-conference for the 2018-19 schedule on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018.
Highlighting the non-conference schedule is a trip to Tennessee on Nov. 14. Following back-to-back contests on the road to open the season, the Bulldogs will host three straight contests inside Kimmel Arena versus Western Carolina, Davidson and Wofford. After a road contest at Furman, the Bulldogs will host two consecutive games, including their annual Education Game versus Warren Wilson and a battle versus ETSU.
UNC Asheville women's basketball is still finalizing times for the non-conference schedule. When officially finalized that information will be passed along. Please note that many game times for the non-conference portion of the 2018-19 schedule will be assigned much later due to television rights.
"I believe our non-conference schedule is tough enough to prepare us for conference play because we have several return games scheduled with the same schools we played last year and those games prepared us well," said Mock. "Our team will need to be ready to play good basketball early in the season because if we aren't, we will have a tough time getting results in the win column.
"We have some especially tough road games, including playing one of the nation's premier programs on Nov. 14 when we travel to Tennessee. I am excited about this season for many reasons and having another opportunity to compete and grow with these amazing young women and our staff is at the top of list."
UNC Asheville opens its season on the road at Charlotte on Nov. 8. This will be the first time since the 2009-10 season that the Bulldogs have traveled to Charlotte to play the 49ers.
After nearly a week off from the hardwood, the Bulldogs will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to square off with Tennessee inside the third-largest on-campus basketball arena in the country – Thompson-Boling Arena. This will be the first-ever contest between the Bulldogs and the Volunteers.
On Nov. 17, UNC Asheville will hold its home opener versus Western Carolina. Last year the Catamounts edged the Bulldogs, 62-52, in Cullowhee, N.C., but the last time the two teams faced off in Asheville – 2015-16 season – the Bulldogs downed Western Carolina, 67-45.
Sandwiched in the middle of a three-game home stretch, UNC Asheville welcomes Davidson to Kimmel Arena on Nov. 21. To conclude the three-game stretch in Asheville, the Bulldogs host Wofford on Nov. 25. Last season, UNC Asheville faced both squads on the road. The Bulldogs fell by eight points to the Wildcats and were nipped by two points by the Terriers.
After playing them twice last season, the Bulldogs seek revenge on the Paladins, as they travel to Furman on Nov. 30. The last time the two clubs squared off was in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI), and the Paladins edged the Bulldogs with a last-second game-winning layup.
To open the month of December, the Bulldogs entertain Warren Wilson on the third of the month. The game will serve as the annual Education Day game. Last year the Bulldogs shattered the attendance record by hosting 2,878 fans inside Kimmel Arena. The team also downed the Owls, 100-53, as two current Bulldogs scored in double-digits – Jessica Wall and Zip Scott.
To conclude the home non-conference schedule, Asheville hosts I-26 rival East Tennessee State University on Dec. 9. This is the first head-to-head contest between the two clubs since the 2015-16 season when the Bulldogs ran through the Big South Conference Tournament and earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
For the final three games of the non-conference schedule, Asheville travels to Tennessee Tech on Dec. 18, and two days later, UNC Asheville travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to face off with Middle Tennessee on Dec. 20. For the final non-conference game of the season, the Bulldogs travel to the Peach State to face Mercer on Dec. 30.
