Men’s Soccer Drops Match to Longwood on Saturday Evening at Greenwood Field

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Two second half goals allowed Longwood to pick up a 4-2 Big South win over UNC Asheville men's soccer on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Greenwood Field.
UNC Asheville (1-7-1, 0-2-0 Big South) opened the match by scoring in the 12th minute. The goal happened when Taylor Durall found his way down the left sideline after a nice move to break outside. Durall then found a streaking Luiz Felipe Dantas, who then easily tapped the ball into the back of the net.
Longwood (3-4-0, 1-0-0 Big South) responded in the 17th minute with a goal by Mikel Abando that tied up the match at 1-1.
The Lancers looked as if they would take a 2-1 lead into the halftime break when Willy Miezan scored at the 44:14 mark.
The Bulldogs had other ideas though with Frank Morales cutting back and finding room just before the touchline to connect with Joe LaCasto near the top of the box. LaCasto then blasted the ball toward Nate Evans, who scored with exactly one second remaining in the first half to send the two teams into the halftime break tied at 2-2.
In the second half, Ander Extaniz (50:32) and Markus Gronli (83:58) would score for the Lancers to give them the 4-2 win.
Both teams had 15 shots in the match with UNC Asheville having a narrow 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The goals for Luiz Felipe Dantas and Nate Evans were the first tallies of the year for both. For Evans it was the first goal of his college career.

UNC Asheville's Luiz Felipe Dantas was chosen as #ThePursuit Man of the Match by the coaching staff. Dantas scored the first goal of the match for the Bulldogs.

"It was a really exciting game for the fans," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "I thought we started off great. We didn't take full advantage of our chances. We had chances to kill the game off and didn't. We gave up a goal and then had a great reaction to tie it at halftime. Then we gave up the goals in the second half. It's a little bit disappointing, but there is a lot of Big South soccer left. There is six games left. There is a ton of points on offer.
"We're certainly not going to hang it up after this result, but this is a bitter pill to swallow. This is not the result we wanted, especially on Alumni Weekend. I thought we started the game rightly, but we certainly didn't finish it that way. We've now got a little bit of a break from Big South play and we welcome Furman next weekend."
