O’Malley Earns Big South Defensive Player of the Week After 17-Save Game Versus VMI

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 that UNC Asheville women's soccer goalkeeper Courtney O'Malley was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
The freshman started in the lone game of the week for the Bulldogs, as they squared off with VMI at home on Friday.
The Cumming, Ga. native lifted UNC Asheville to a 0-0 tie following 17 total saves versus the Keydets. The 17 saves marks the most by a Big South goalkeeper since the 2013 season. O'Malley was just three saves away from matching a UNC Asheville record that was set by Tracy Brainard during the 1992 season.
In total, VMI ripped 32 shots at O'Malley.
The shutout tally marked the first of her career.
In her two games this season, O'Malley is 0-0-2 with 220 minutes of action between the posts. She has earned 23 saves, totes an astounding .958 save percentage and sports a 0.41 goals against average.
O'Malley and the UNC Asheville women's soccer team will return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 19, as the Bulldogs travel to Longwood for their first conference match of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Farmville, Va.
