UNC Asheville Volleyball Travels to Chattanooga Classic This Weekend

2018 UNC Asheville Volleyball Media Guide

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – UNC Asheville volleyball looks to continue its strong start to the 2018 season this weekend at the Chattanooga Classic.

UNC Asheville (2-1) will first face off against host Chattanooga of the Southern Conference at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31.

The Bulldogs will then face new Atlantic Sun Conference member North Alabama at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1. UNC Asheville will then conclude its time at the tournament by taking on Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1.

BULLDOG BITES

UNC Asheville Last Weekend
The Bulldogs opened their 2018 season with a 2-1 record at the UNC Asheville Invitational. The UNC Asheville volleyball team started off the 2018 regular season the right way with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-16) victory over Coppin State at the Justice Center on Friday, Aug. 24.

The UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-17) win over The Citadel in its second match of the Asheville Invitational at the Justice Center. As a team, UNC Asheville finished the match hitting an impressive .359 as a team, while limiting The Citadel to a hitting percentage of .181.

UNC Asheville dropped its first match of the 2018 season in its final match of the UNC Asheville Invitational with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-18) loss to Appalachian State.

UNC Asheville Featured by NCAA Volleyball
UNC Asheville volleyball was featured on Sunday, Aug. 26, by the NCAA on its volleyball social media accounts.

The play featured was a beautiful kick save by junior Julia Borges that eventually led to a Bulldog point.

As of Thursday, Aug. 30, the video has been viewed over 45,000 times on Instagram and over 11,000 times on Twitter.

Guthrie Named Big South Volleyball Player of the Week
UNC Asheville senior outside hitter Cara Guthrie was selected as the Big South Volleyball Player of the Week. The league office made the official announcement on Monday, Aug. 27, 2018.

Guthrie has now been chosen Big South Player of the Week three times in her career. She was twice named conference Player of the Week during the 2017 season (Oct. 9 and Oct. 30).

A preseason All-Big South Conference selection, Guthrie ended the UNC Asheville Invitational this past weekend with 3.67 kills and 1.89 digs per set. The senior outside hitter from Jupiter, Fla. finished with 33 kills and 17 digs in total. She also had six service aces on the weekend.

For her efforts, Guthrie was chosen to the UNC Asheville Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Guthrie led all of the Big South last week in kills (3.67), points (4.44) and aces (0.67) per set. Guthrie hit an impressive .342 en route to the league-leading numbers.

Borges and Guthrie Named to UNC Asheville Invitational All-Tournament Team
Junior Julia Borges and senior Cara Guthrie were chosen to the 2018 UNC Asheville Invitational All-Tournament Team after the conclusion of the event at the Justice Center on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018.

Borges finished her first weekend in a Bulldog uniform with 23 kills. The junior right side from Rio De Janeiro, Brazil averaged 2.56 kills per set in UNC Asheville's three matches in the tournament.

Nearing 1,000 Assists
Carter Kennedy finished the opening weekend of action for UNC Asheville last weekend with 37 assists. She now has 986 assists in her Bulldog career.

Nearing 1,000 Kills
Cara Guthrie begins the Chattanooga Classic with 943 kills in her career for UNC Asheville. She surpassed the 800-dig mark at the UNC Asheville Invitational last weekend. She now has 811 digs in her Bulldog career.

Obviously we would like to continue on the success we had this past weekend (at the UNC Asheville Invitational)," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said. "At the same time, it's preparation, so as long as our attitude and effort are right despite the result, if we can continue with the consistency, attitude and effort, we'll be happy with whatever the result is because this is all preparation for the Big South Championships."

About the Chattanooga Classic Field
The Mocs open up their home tournament with an overall record of 1-2. Chattanooga picked up a win over Belmont in its season opener, but then dropped matches to No. 22 Michigan State and Tennessee at the Tennessee Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. The Mocs returned 13 letterwinners from a 2017 team that finished with a 13-18 overall record.

North Alabama travels to the Chattanooga Classic with an overall record of 0-3 after dropping all of its matches at the Jacksonville State Classic in Jacksonville, Ala. last weekend. The Lions are playing in their inaugural NCAA Division I season under new head coach Bob White. Last season in their final season in NCAA Division II, the Lions amassed a 27-8 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Tennessee State makes its way to Chattanooga with an overall record of 1-2 on the season. Last weekend, the Tigers bested Florida A&M, but dropped matches to Stetson and FIU at the FIU Kickoff in Miami, Fla. Tennessee returned three letterwinners this season off a 2017 team that finished with a 7-23 overall record.

UNC Asheville will travel to Charleston, S.C. for its final regular season tournament of the 2018 season. The Bulldogs will play three matches in the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley College of Charleston Invitational.

UNC Asheville will open the tournament by facing host College of Charleston of the Colonial Athletic Association at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. The next day, UNC Asheville will open its Saturday with a 10 a.m. match against Davidson of the Atlantic 10. The Bulldogs will close out the tournament by battling The Citadel for the second time in the 2018 season at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.
