St. Louis Story

ST. LOUIS – Just 45 days after being named the interim manager, former UNC Asheville baseball player Mike Shildt had the interim tag removed and he has been named the permanent manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals are a Major League-best 26-12 since Shildt took over. The Cardinals have had a streak of nine consecutive winning series. The Cardinals (73-58) are also now back in the National League Central race and just 4.5 games back of the Chicago Cubs (77-53). If the season ended today, St. Louis would have a Wild Card spot.

Before being tabbed as interim manager in mid-July, Shildt had served as the bench coach for the Cardinals before being promoted to interim manager after the firing of Mike Matheny.

A member of the UNC Asheville team from 1987-90, Shildt was also an assistant coach for the Bulldog baseball program from 1992-93.

Shildt has been a member of the Cardinals organization since 2004. He has been a member of the big league staff for the last two seasons after managing in the minor leagues for the organization.

Shildt led the Double-A Springfield Cardinals to the Texas League championship in 2012. The Springfield Cardinals were named Baseball America's Team of the Year after its championship.

Shildt has also managed the Johnson City Cardinals of the Rookie Appalachian League and the Memphis Redbirds of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.
