08.24.2018 | Men's Soccer
DAYTON, Ohio – In a very entertaining match and one in which UNC Asheville held strong momentum at points, it was Wright State that narrowly escaped with a 3-2 season-opening win over the visiting Bulldogs on Friday, Aug. 24.
UNC Asheville (0-1) started the game by scoring one of the fastest goals in league and Bulldog history by finding the back of the net just 40 seconds into the match.
It was Colin Daughtry who scored the first goal of the game for UNC Asheville just 40 seconds in off an assist by Izaiah Vignali. The goal was the second of Daughtry's Bulldog career.
The Bulldogs would hold that 1-0 lead until the 23rd minute when Dominik Tajak scored for Wright State to tie the game at 1-1. Tajak then assisted Alec Philippe in the 25th minute to give the Raiders (1-0) a 2-1 advantage.
UNC Asheville would even things up though in the 37th minute when Vignali netted his first regular season goal on a penalty kick.
The two teams would enter the halftime break all tied up at 2-2.
Wright State picked up the game-winning goal in the 75th minute when Dan Bent scored off an assist from Jackson Dietrich.

Quotable
"I'm very pleased with the effort our group put into the game tonight," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "I thought that the way we battled on the road against a very physical and purposeful Wright State team was excellent. I thought the game had some momentum swings and unfortunately we were at the back end of it.
"It was a pretty entertaining college soccer game. Overall, I am very pleased. You hate to lose, but our group had the effort, commitment and discipline to stick to our game plan. They did a great job. The college soccer season is a long season and you take the lessons from the first part of the games and apply the things we need to work on."
