UNC Asheville Student-Athletes Heavily Featured on Big South Presidential Honor Roll

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A total of 106 UNC Asheville student-athletes have been named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll.
The Big South Conference in total had 58.69 percent of eligible student-athletes earn Presidential Honor Roll status for their work in the classroom in 2017-18.
To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently-completed academic year, and this past season, 1,750 out of 2,982 eligible Big South student-athletes achieved the benchmark. In addition, the 58.69 percentage marks the fourth consecutive year above 50 percent.
Beginning this year, new award levels were established within the Presidential Honor Roll to recognize academic achievement and 187 student-athletes received Commissioner's Award distinction for achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA in 2017-18, which was an increase of 52 from last year, and each of the Big South's 19 sponsored sports had at least three 4.0 students.
The new Gold Award recognizes student-athletes with GPAs in the 3.75-3.99 range, the Silver Award is bestowed upon 3.50-3.74 GPAs, and the Bronze Award honors those with 3.00-3.49 grade-point averages. The Big South had 403 Gold Award scholars and 412 Silver Award honorees in 2017-18 -- a total of 1,002 student-athletes with at least a 3.50 GPA last year and 57.26 percent of all Presidential Honor Roll members at or above the threshold.
Overall, it was a special year in the classroom at UNC Asheville with four Bulldogs garnering Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for their sport.
UNC Asheville men's basketball standout Kevin Vannatta was also chosen as the 2017-18 Big South Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Kayli Nichols of track and field was selected as the Big South Conference's Woman of the Year. Both earned Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades for their sport.
In addition to the Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for Nichols and Vannatta, Blanton Gillespie was named the Big South Men's Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Catherine Allen of UNC Asheville swimming was named the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
For the 2017-18 athletic year overall, UNC Asheville student-athletes showed their commitment to the classroom by finishing the academic year with a combined grade-point average of 3.142.
Impressively, 72 percent (161 of 223) of UNC Asheville student-athletes during the 2017-18 athletic year received Athletic Director Honor Roll recognition with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
In addition, 90 Bulldog student-athletes owned a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher to earn Dean's List recognition.
UNC Asheville athletics had a total of 24 student-athletes collect Chancellor's List honors in the 2017-18 athletic year with perfect 4.0 grade-point averages.
The athletic year concluded for UNC Asheville with 42 athletic graduates taking part in the May 2018 Commencement exercises held at the quadrangle on the UNC Asheville campus on Saturday, May 12, 2018.
