Brown Promoted to Associate Head Coach for Women’s Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick announced the promotion of Honey Brown on Tuesday, as the six-year assistant coach will become the Associate Head Coach for the Bulldog program this upcoming season.

"Honey is one of the most loyal and committed assistant coaches in the women's game. I have no doubt that she is capable of taking the reins of her own program, but I am grateful that she has invested in helping to build something special here at UNC Asheville," said Mock. "I am delighted to announce that she will be promoted from Assistant Coach to Associate Head Coach this summer. A title that is well deserved and certainly speaks volumes to the job that she has done during her time here in Asheville."

"I truly appreciate and am honored to be promoted by Coach Mock. I have learned so much under her guidance, and I look forward to growing even more in this program," said Brown.

Brown enters her seventh season at UNC Asheville. Prior to entering the 2018-19 season, Brown was the assistant coach for the previous six seasons for the women's basketball program.

During her time in Asheville, she has seen the program make an appearance in three straight postseason tournaments (2017-18, 2016-17 and 2015-16 seasons), win two Big South Conference Tournament crowns (2016-17 and 2015-16) and claim a Big South Regular-Season title (2015-16).

Last season, the Bulldogs hit multiple milestone throughout the season, which was capped off by hosting a WBI (Women's Basketball Invitational) game.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a winning record, which marked the third straight season of accomplishing that feat and the eighth overall time in program history.

With its impressive 12-6 record in Big South Conference games, it marked the second time in the last three seasons the program has accomplished that milestone.

Under Brown's guidance, Bronaza Fitzgerald and Khaila Webb each had historic senior seasons last year, as both earned All-Conference honors as well as earning their names in the UNC Asheville record books.

Fitzgerald broke the UNC Asheville Division I record for single-season rebounds with 319. The Danville, Va. native also went 1.000 percent from the field (10-for-10) at High Point (Feb. 11) and capped off her season with a .574 career field goal percentage, which broke the UNC Asheville Division I record.

Webb netted 438 points in her final season, which currently ranks ninth in the UNC Asheville Division I record book. The Spartanburg, S.C. native also finished her career with 1,109 points, which ranks her 13th all-time and eighth in UNC Asheville Division I in career scoring.

Rising senior guard Jessica Wall also had an impressive season last year, as she knocked down 90 total three-pointers. That mark broke the previous best record that was held by former teammate Chatori Major (78 three-pointers made – 2016-17 season). Wall finished the season breaking another school record, as she connected with nine three-pointers during the WBI contest versus Furman.

Overall, Brown has coached nine total 1,000-point scorers, eight All-Big South Conference honorees, one Player of the Year, six Big South All-Tournament honorees and two Big South Tournament Most Valuable Players.
