Former UNC Asheville Baseball Player Mike Shildt Named Interim Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals

ST. LOUIS – Former UNC Asheville baseball player Mike Shildt has been named the interim manager for the St. Louis Cardinals.

In his first game as manager of St. Louis, the Cardinals picked up a 6-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, July 15. 

Shildt had served as the bench coach for the Cardinals before being promoted to interim manager after the firing of Mike Matheny.

A member of the UNC Asheville team from 1987-90, Shildt was also an assistant coach for the Bulldog baseball program from 1992-93.

Shildt has been a member of the Cardinals organization since 2004. He has been a member of the big league staff for the last two seasons after managing in the minor leagues for the organization.

Shildt led the Double-A Springfield Cardinals to the Texas League championship in 2012. The Springfield Cardinals were named Baseball America's Team of the Year after its championship.

Shildt has also managed the Johnson City Cardinals of the Rookie Appalachian League and the Memphis Redbirds of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.
