ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville athletics department announced recently that Dan Freeman has joined the Bulldog team as the Assistant Director for Athletics Advancement.
Freeman joins the UNC Asheville athletics department from Charlotte where he most recently served as the Coordinator of Athletics Development.
"We are excited that Dan Freeman will be joining the UNC Asheville athletics department," Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics for Advancement and Alumni Engagement Betsy Blose said. "He has some valuable experience being a former student-athlete and working for the last few years in athletics advancement at Charlotte. He will bring a strong work ethic and a high energy level. We're excited for him to join our team."
Freeman is excited to be a Bulldog.
"This was the opportunity that I've been seeking for some time," Freeman said. "The culture, the people and the responsibilities I will have are what made this opportunity. I'd like to thank my team at Charlotte for supporting me and giving me the opportunity to learn as much as I could while I was there. I'd like to thank (Director of Athletics) Janet R. Cone, Betsy Blose and (Assistant Athletics Director for Athletics Advancement/Major Gifts) David Jandrew for offering me this opportunity. I'm ready to dig in and start fundraising."
A former track and field student-athlete at Charlotte, Freeman has spent the last almost two years helping his alma mater in a variety of ways. In fact, he was an integral part of working with former 49er student-athletes where he was the creator of the "Niner Varsity Society," which is for former student-athletes, spirit groups and support staff. Freeman helped fundraise over $140,000 just from former student-athletes as part of the society.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, Freeman worked as a Marketing Graduate Assistant/Assistant Director for the ULM athletics department. At ULM, Freeman was the ULM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Advisor. He was also the advisor for Ace's Army, which is ULM's student rewards program. He was the marketing coordinator and on-court emcee for men's and women's basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball and football. Freeman was named the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) Young Professional of the Month in August of 2015.
Freeman also served as a Sports Information Intern at Charlotte before finishing his graduate studies at ULM. He worked with the track and field program and helped increase traffic to their social media platform by over 500 percent.
The school record holder in the javelin at Charlotte, Freeman was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll multiple times. He was also the President of the Charlotte Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (May 2013-May 2015) where his role allowed him to also serve as the Chair of the Conference USA SAAC (July 2014-July 2015).
Freeman graduated from Charlotte with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in May of 2015. He minored in Exercise Science. He picked up his Master of Science in Exercise Science in December of 2016 from ULM. Freeman is currently pursuing his Ph.D in Global Sport Leadership from East Tennessee State University. He will graduate in 2020.
