ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It's a special event that all UNC Asheville baseball players look forward to every year.

Even if they have to shave their heads.

This year, the UNC Asheville baseball program held their annual Vs. Cancer game at McCormick Field on Wednesday, April 4, at McCormick Field, and once again it was a huge success.

UNC Asheville picked up its fifth straight win over Western Carolina with an 8-4 victory, but despite the huge win on the field it was what happened before and after that was probably the most impressive for the Bulldogs.

Before the fifth straight win for the Bulldogs over their rival even happened, UNC Asheville was able to present Associate Campaign Director Rachel Mark and the Vs. Cancer Foundation with a check for $12,300.

The $12,300 raised this year means that UNC Asheville has raised over $35,000 for Vs. Cancer over the last few years.

UNC Asheville baseball head coach Scott Friedholm is proud of the efforts of his team and everyone involved in helping such a tremendous cause.

"This event has grown over the last four years to kind of be a staple in not only our program, but a staple in the city of Asheville," Friedholm said. "We have both Baseball Night and the Vs. Cancer game, which both continue to grow in not only popularity, but also financially in helping this program and the Vs. Cancer Foundation."

After the game, the Bulldogs as always shaved their heads in support of Vs. Cancer thanks to the efforts of Sport Clips.

Friedholm knows that having your head shaved in support of Vs. Cancer every year has truly become a part of the program.

"For our guys – especially our seniors – this is their fourth year," Friedholm said. "They've got graduation right around the corner, and for them to say 'this doesn't matter, we're going to support this foundation and support what this foundation is doing,' it shows a lot to what our freshmen are walking into and now what their expectations are for the next three years as well."

About VS. Cancer

Vs. Cancer operates on a 50/50 model of giving. Every gift to Vs. Cancer does two jobs: make life better for kids currently fighting cancer at local children's hospitals and fund research into life-saving treatments for pediatric brain tumors.

The foundation gives half of the proceeds to pediatric brain tumor research and the other half back to the local hospital in the community where that money was raised. For UNC Asheville, that is Mission Children's Hospital.

In the past few years, because of the efforts of UNC Asheville baseball, Vs. Cancer has been able to assist Mission with purchasing iPads and laptops for patients to use to keep up with homework during treatment as well as help with building a teen room to serve the older group of patients that are going through cancer treatment at an especially difficult age.

Vs. Cancer is a non-profit fundraising campaign of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. They are dedicated to saving kids' lives by empowering athletes and communities to fund lifesaving childhood cancer efforts. For more information on this worthwhile cause, visit www.vs-cancer.org.
