04.03.2018 | Athletics News

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Thanks to the tremendous support of UNC Asheville fans and friends everywhere, the 2018 Bulldog Challenge reached historic heights with over $130,000 raised.

In total, the 2017 Bulldog Challenge went 265 percent past its original goal of $40,000 with $106,000 raised.

For 2018, UNC Asheville set an ambitious goal of $125,000, with the over $130,000 donated going well past its original goal.

An impressive nearly $35,000 of the over $130,000 donated was raised by current UNC Asheville student-athletes.

"I want to thank everyone that supported the Bulldog Challenge this year," Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics for Advancement and Alumni Engagement Betsy Blose said. "Whether you made a gift or gave us your time, we appreciate you so much. I want to thank our coaches and student-athletes who invested in the Bulldog Challenge this month by making personal plea videos and participating in the Facebook LIVE Event. The partnership between Athletics and University Advancement is what has helped this campaign grow each and every year. A special shout out to Aaron Dahlstrom and Emma Anderson in Advancement. They took the lead on many facets of this campaign and deserve so much credit."

During the month of March, all former student-athletes and Bulldog fans were challenged to make a gift to UNC Asheville Athletics. Their gift directly impacts today's scholar-athlete by providing scholarships, tutoring and essential academic support that allow the Bulldogs to compete at the highest level.

The 2016 Bulldog Challenge had 237 total gifts, while the 2017 Bulldog Challenge had a total of 571 overall gifts with 442 unique donors.

The 2018 Bulldog Challenge raised the over $130,000 with 539 donors.

The UNC Asheville women's golf team was the 2018 Bulldog Challenge champions with close to 100 unique donors. Women's soccer finished in second with 69 unique donors.

The most improved performance came from the UNC Asheville track and field program, who had an impressive 139 percent increase in donors.

Over $17,000 of the over $130,000 raised came from the inaugural Bulldog Challenge Facebook LIVE event.

UNC Asheville athletics held its inaugural Facebook LIVE Bulldog Challenge event from 7-8 p.m. on Monday, March 26, and in just one hour raised $17,265.

The Facebook LIVE event was billed as a chance for UNC Asheville student-athletes and fans to get the opportunity to raise the most money in support of their team so that they could dunk their coach in the Justice Center Pool.

It was baseball that had that opportunity with assistant coach Jonathan Johnston taking the plunge after the program raised an impressive $10,400 over the course of the hour.

Johnston made his way into the water alongside UNC Asheville's beloved mascot, Rocky, in a kayak.

UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick and Blose also made their way into the pool. Women's basketball raised a tremendous $3,960 for the program over the course of the hour.

The UNC Asheville baseball team raised the most money during the 2018 Bulldog Challenge with close to $25,000 raised.
