Koike Breaks School Record Again; Six Bulldogs Break Personal Records

DURHAM, N.C. – After breaking the school record in the 400m last weekend, senior Hunter Koike reset the program record again on Friday at the Duke Invitational, while five other UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field athletes also set career-best times in their respective events at the Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium. 

Highlights

Koike, who broke UNC Asheville's record last weekend in the 400m, re-broke the school record again on Friday. This time the senior clocked a 49.28 time in the event at the Duke Invitational. The new record bested the previous best mark by 0.16 seconds. Right behind him was teammate Tyree McFalling. The sophomore posted a 49.30, which is a new career-best time. Koike placed 28th in the 69-person field, while McFalling finished 29th.

Despite not recording a career-best time, Dominic Collichio finished third in the men's 5000m. He clocked a 14:54.18, which was just over a second and a half from matching the second-place finisher.

Phoebe Schneider had a strong performance on the women's side of the 5000m, as the senior posted a 17:54.74. The time shattered her previous-best mark by nearly 29 seconds and placed her sixth out of 47 total runners. Kelley Coleman finished five spots behind her teammate, as she also set a new career-best time (18:09.53).

Kayli Nichols was the lone Bulldog representative in the women's 100m hurdles invitational prelims, and the senior finished ninth out of 21 highly-competitive sprinters. She clocked a 14.47 time, as she finished one spot away from qualifying for the finals. The time also marked her best outdoor mark in the event this season.

Sage Turner collected another top-10 finish for Asheville, as he clocked a 9:34.41 in the men's 3000m steeplechase. He finished ninth out of 31 runners. 

David Hager also collected a career-best time, as he posted a 4:01.14 in the men's 1500m. The time placed him 28th in the event.

As the lone Bulldog representative in the field events on Friday, Victor Mathuthu finished 11th out of 24 athletes in the long jump. He made a leap of 6.75m, which bested his previous career-best mark by 0.01m. 

What's Next?

The Bulldogs conclude competition at the Duke Invitational on Saturday, April 21, with the first event starting at 10 a.m. with the men's discus. The final event of the two-day meet is the women's 5000m invitational at 7:40 p.m.
