ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Blanton Gillespie of UNC Asheville track and field and cross country has received the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship.
The Goldwater Scholarship is considered the most prestigious undergraduate scholarship given in the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics. The award is given annually to only 212 college sophomores or juniors nationwide.
Gillespie is one of just seven 2018 Goldwater Scholars from the state of North Carolina for the scholarship that is up to a maximum of $7,500 and based on merit with the actual amount given based on financial need.
"Our program is very excited about this honor for Blanton," UNC Asheville head track and field and cross country coach Jesse Norman said. "He was thrilled to learn about earning this scholarship. This scholarship shows the kind of student-athletes that we recruit here to UNC Asheville. Blanton has done a great job for us during his career here, both on the track and very obviously in the classroom and research lab. He has been someone that all of the students in our program look to for what can be accomplished in the classroom and how to balance the time demands of his studies and athletics. This scholarship will set him up for incredible opportunities as he looks towards his next steps in his education."
A distance runner, Gillespie was selected to the 2018 Big South Men's Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team following the conclusion of the Indoor Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018.
The chemistry major with a minor in neuroscience owns a 3.995 grade-point average.
