ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team fell in its conference opener, 5-2, to Winthrop on Sunday, March 4, at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown.
The match opened with Winthrop (3-5, 2-0 Big South Conference) taking the doubles point with wins at all three flights over UNC Asheville (3-6, 0-1 Big South Conference). The Bulldogs narrowly missed on a win at No. 2 doubles with the tandem of Olly Cull and James Massie falling 7-6 to Winthrop's Connor Williamson and Diego Quiroz.
UNC Asheville's two wins on the day came at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Oli Nolan picked up the win at No. 2 singles with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Williamson. The win was Nolan's third of the year at No. 2 singles.
Olly Cull secured his team-best sixth singles win of the year at No. 3 singles with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Leandros Pappayiannis. Cull has now won two straight and is 6-3 overall in singles.
UNC Asheville men's tennis will hit the road once again next to take on future Big South Conference foe USC Upstate at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, in Spartanburg, S.C.
