ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) announced on Monday, March 12, that the UNC Asheville women's basketball team has been invited to participate and host the first round of the postseason tournament.
The game will take place on Thursday, March 15, against Furman at 7 p.m. inside the friendly confines of Kimmel Arena.
The WBI invited 16 teams to play in the prestigious tournament, and the Bulldogs were selected as one of eight teams to host the opening round of the tournament.
The winner between UNC Asheville and Furman will advance to play the winner of South Alabama and Stetson. The second round contest will take place on Sunday, March 18 or Monday, March 19 with the host location to be determined.
With the postseason invitation, it marks the third straight year the Bulldogs have been selected to participate in postseason play. It marks the first time the Bulldogs have played in the WBI since the tournament's inception in 2010.
About Furman and Previous History with the Paladins
Furman enters postseason play with a 17-13 overall record and a 7-7 mark in Southern Conference play. The Paladins made a brief appearance in the SoCon Tournament earlier this month, as they were eliminated, 59-58, versus Samford in the opening round. However, the Paladins ended their regular season 4-1 in their last five games.
The two teams met earlier this season (Dec. 28) in Kimmel Arena, and the Paladins came out victorious, 71-63.
Thursday's meeting will mark the 30th all-time meeting between the two schools, as Furman holds the narrow 15-14 all-time lead on the Bulldogs.
