Freshmen Pave Way for UNC Asheville at the Appalachian State Open

– Multiple freshmen had impressive performances for the Bulldogs on Saturday, as the UNC Asheville track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Appalachian State Open inside the Holmes Convocation Center.

Highlights

On Friday's portion of the meet, sophomore Victor Mathuthu was the high spot for the Bulldogs, as he posted another first-place honor to his résumé. He competed with 11 other jumpers in the triple jump, and he posted a mark of 14.33m, which bested the runner-up by 0.27m.

Freshman Jack Choiniere had an impressive showing in his first collegiate meet. He posted a throw of 13.50m in the men's shot put. The toss placed him sixth out of 22 throwers.

Fellow freshman Huntyr Hopkins also had a strong performance in the women's high jump. She finished tied for fifth with a top mark of 1.55m.

Claudia Prieto Alcaide was also fantastic in her first career meet. The freshman from Spain competed in the women's long jump, and she earned the bronze medal in the event. She posted a 5.40m mark, and that mark is now the second-best result in school history. Teammate Asia Washington finished seventh with a 5.27m mark, and that leap is now the third-longest in program history.

Mathuthu kept his momentum going on Saturday, as he earned his second medal of the meet, a third-place finish. The sophomore jumper posted a mark of 6.98m in the long jump, which was only 0.05m away from matching second place.

Prieto Alcaide was also strong on the track side of the meet, as the freshman finished fourth in the women's 55m. The Spain native clocked a 7.35 time, as she claimed five team points for UNC Asheville. Washington was Asheville's second-best finisher, as the sophomore placed 11th with a 7.54 time.

The UNC Asheville men's team was really strong in the 55m, as three freshmen Bulldogs finished inside of the top-10. Denly Joseph placed fifth with a 6.56 mark. Akin Williams finished seventh with a 6.59 time, and Lee Goings earned a ninth-place finish with a 6.64 time.

Another freshman posted a top-3 finish, as Madeline Nichols finished third in the women's one mile run. The Columbus, Ohio native clocked a 5:23.11 time and earned six points for the Bulldogs.

Junior Desire Brown paced Asheville in the women's 300m, as she finished just outside of the top-3 (fourth place). She clocked a 42.25 time. Freshman Khadeesha Crumbly earned a sixth-place finish with a 42.40 mark in the same event.

After an impressive sophomore season, Tyree McFalling picked up where he left off, as the junior finished third in the men's 300m. He posted a 35.85 time, and that time was only 0.7 seconds away from matching the second-place finisher. Robert Brenneman finished in the top-half of the event, as the sophomore placed ninth with a 37.40.

Freshman Alyx Evans led Asheville in the women's 800m. She finished with a bronze medal with a 2:27.55 time.

On the men's side of the 800m, freshmen Roberto Castro and Jack Clemens were the two Bulldog representatives, and the duo finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

In the lone relay events of the meet, UNC Asheville was unsurprisingly impressive again, as it won the men's 4x300m relay and finished second in the women's 4x300m relay.

Consisting of Goings, McFalling, Tim Thorpe and Brenneman, the foursome cruised to a first-place finish with a mark of 2:25.95. The four Bulldogs were over a half-a-second faster than the runner-up.

The women's relay team consisting of Brown, Crumbly, Evans and Kindra Mingo earned runner-up status. The four Bulldogs clocked a 2:51.65 time en route to eight team points for the Bulldogs.

Overall, both teams finished fifth in the team rankings. The men's side accumulated 50 team points, and the women's side tallied 49.5 points.

What's Next?

UNC Asheville will travel to Lexington, Va. to compete in the Keydet Invitational. The two-day meet begins on Friday, Jan. 18 at Virginia Military Institute.
