UNC Asheville Bows Out of Big South Tournament With Semifinal Loss to High Point

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A tremendous season for UNC Asheville volleyball unfortunately came to a close in a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-10) Big South Championship semifinal loss to top-seeded High Point at the Justice Center on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018.
The loss snapped a 10-match winning streak for UNC Asheville (16-12).
High Point (20-9) looked as if they would easily take the first couple of sets at one point, but the fourth-seeded Bulldogs battled to an 18-17 advantage in set two at one point. The Bulldogs would not be able to close out the win in the set though with High Point securing a 25-20 win in the set before closing things out in the match with a third set win.
Ansley Rooks led UNC Asheville in the match with five kills, four digs and one block.
Grace Volk just missed on a double-double with 10 assists and six digs. Madisen Zyburt led UNC Asheville in digs with eight.
Two finished with double-digit kills for High Point with Jordan Hefner securing a match-high 11.

UNC Asheville's 10-match winning streak that was snapped in its semifinal loss to High Point was its longest winning streak since 2005. UNC Asheville's 16 wins this season were the most for the Bulldogs since winning 17 in the 2013 season. UNC Asheville's thrilling win over USC Upstate in the Big South Tournament quarterfinals on Friday allowed the Bulldogs to pick up their first conference tournament win since 2012. UNC Asheville's last tournament win came in a 3-1 victory over High Point on Nov. 15, 2012, at the championship that was held that year at Gardner-Webb.

Cara Guthrie joined the ultra-exclusive club of those with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in the road win at Radford to close out the regular season. Guthrie finished her impressive career with 1,262 kills and 1,025 digs. Guthrie with over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs became just the 46th player in Big South Conference history to have 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career.
Guthrie also ended her career with 138 aces, meaning that with her over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs she became just the 35th in league history with over 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 100 aces.
Madisen Zyburt's career-best 470 digs this season are the fifth-most in a single season in program history in UNC Asheville's 25-point rally scoring era (2008-pres.) Her 4.70 digs per set are the fourth-best single-season mark in UNC Asheville's 25-point rally scoring era.
Zyburt finished her three years in a Bulldog uniform with an impressive 1,187 digs.
