ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It may have been held indoors due to the weather over the course of the week, but that did not deter anyone from having a tremendous time at the Second Annual Maybin Mission Youth Camp on the campus of UNC Asheville.
The Maybin Mission Youth Camp is a complimentary baseball program hosted by Major League Baseball outfielder and Asheville native Cameron Maybin. The program is open to participants aged 8-13.
Held inside the Student Recreation Center inside the Sherrill Center this year, the Maybin Mission Youth Camp featured five interactive stations that focused on base running, hitting, throwing/pitching and infield and outfield.
In addition to being able to learn from Maybin, all of those in attendance also had the unique opportunity to learn from and work with the 2018 UNC Asheville baseball team.
Maybin was thrilled once again to be back on the UNC Asheville campus showing kids the ins and outs of the game he loves.
"This is great," Maybin said. "I told Scott Friedholm earlier that he does realize and his players do not realize how important they are to the community. This is a great event that kids and their parents get to come out to and not pay a dime, and they get to learn the fundamentals of the game. They get the ingredients of the game. I'm excited about being able to help out and give back."
UNC Asheville baseball head coach Scott Friedholm is truly appreciative of the efforts of Maybin and his support for the community and UNC Asheville. He knows having a World Series champion on campus working with his players and teaching the game means a great deal.
"It's a great partnership and obviously his name in this community creates quite a buzz," Friedholm said. "For us to host 200 kids every year on our campus is special. For a lot of these kids it's their first time on a college campus, so it's a great treat to have them and have their families here. Cameron is obviously a great host and the kids love him."
