UNC Asheville Drops First Conference Match of Season at Gardner-Webb

09.26.2017 | Women's Volleyball

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball battled back from a two-set deficit to send the match to five sets, but Gardner-Webb was still able to narrowly pick up a 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 14-25, 13-25, 15-13) win over Asheville.

After dropping the first two sets, UNC Asheville (6-8, 2-1 Big South Conference) dominated sets three and four to force the decisive fifth set.

The two teams would battle back and forth in the fifth set with things all tied up at 12-12 in the latter part of the game. The Runnin' Bulldogs (7-8, 1-2 Big South Conference) would narrowly escape from there in the 15-13 set win that garnered them the match victory.

Three Bulldogs finished with double-digit kills with junior outside hitter Cara Guthrie leading the way with 15 kills, nine digs and three blocks.

Sophomore right side Ansley Rooks and freshman outside hitter KK Haley both ended their efforts on the evening with 10 kills each. Rooks also had six digs and two blocks, while Haley had nine digs and two blocks.

Junior defensive specialist Madisen Zyburt led all in the match with 25 digs.

Sophomore setter Carter Kennedy led the Bulldogs in assists with 23. She also had five digs. Sophomore setter Kailey Hackett had 18 assists.

Cecilia Stack led the Bulldogs in blocks with five.

Gardner-Webb was led by Keira Moore's 12 kills.

BULLDOG BITES

"Battle of the Bulldogs" Evened Up
The Big South-opening win for UNC Asheville last week was also the first "Battle of the Bulldogs" meeting of the year in the battle for supremacy among the Big South's Bulldogs in Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville. Gardner-Webb's win on Tuesday evens the series on the year at 1-1. UNC Asheville women's soccer will look to put the Bulldogs back ahead of the Runnin' Bulldogs in the series once again at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Quotable
"It was a difficult match because both teams were very inconsistent. I thought we did a good job finding our way back into the match, but we couldn't finish the job and when it's close in the fifth set, you really have to be awake on the details or the opponent makes you pay. It's early in the season and we will keep working hard." – Head Coach Frederico Santos

Up Next
UNC Asheville will next travel to Lynchburg, Va. to battle the Flames of Liberty at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30. The match will not be streamed live, but it will be able to be followed via live stats on uncabulldogs.com.
