Bulldog Baseball Family Returns for Annual Golf Outing
09.22.2017 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball program is truly a family, and on Friday, Sept. 22, at the Grove Park Inn Golf Course that was definitely easy to see by everyone in attendance.
This year's UNC Asheville Baseball Alumni Golf Outing is one of the biggest yet, and this event is always one that Bulldog baseball head coach Scott Friedholm looks forward to every year.
"It's great to have everyone out here supporting our program," Friedholm said. "The numbers are tremendous again and we are even seeing some new faces among the mix this year, which is always something that we are looking for. The guys are excited to come back and support the program and to also get to be around each other and remember the good old days. We are also hearing great questions from them about this year's team, the facilities and the new direction we are headed as a program."
One day earlier, Justin Wilkins was a part of UNC Asheville's annual "Bulldog Alumni Career Panel," and just one day later he was thrilled to be around his Bulldog baseball family.
"I'm really excited to be here and to see all of the Bulldogs out here supporting the program, while also having a great day of fellowship," Wilkins said.
Former Bulldog pitcher Chris Nigro has been attending the golf outings since they started, and he was once again excited to see so many wanting to come back to Asheville to support the program they love.
"It's really great to see all of the guys come back from 2003 when I started here to the recently graduated," Nigro said. "The event really has grown. It's great just to be back to campus, return to Asheville and see everybody."
UNC Asheville baseball put together an impressive run in 2017 and ended the season in the semifinal round of the Big South Conference Championship, accomplishing something that a Bulldog team had not done since the 2007 season: win two games in the postseason conference tourney to advance to the semifinal round.
The Bulldogs collected 25 wins on the year, tied for sixth-most in program history and the most since the 2004 team won 26. Along the way, the Bulldogs were never swept and won critical games by answering the call just about every day. Friedholm and staff return 21 players this upcoming season.
