Bulldogs Rally to Pick Up Gutsy Win Over Delaware State

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team rallied from two sets down to pick up a thrilling 3-2 (17-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14, 15-8) win over Delaware State on Friday, Sept. 15, in their first match of The Henson's Hawk Invite.
After falling behind to enter the third set needing to get back in the match, UNC Asheville hit .310 as a team in the third set. In the fourth set, the Bulldogs hit an impressive .484 as a team in their 11-point victory.
The Bulldogs (3-6) would close out the match hitting .304 as a team. Delaware State (0-12) hit just .129 as a team in its loss to UNC Asheville.
Junior outside hitter Cara Guthrie led the Bulldogs in their win with 21 kills to go along with seven digs. Guthrie hit an extremely impressive .488 in the match. She also had three service aces.
Freshman middle blocker Ava Venema was the only other Bulldog with double-digit kills in the match with 12. She hit .455 in the match.
Sophomore defensive specialist Sheridan Salisbury led the Bulldogs in digs overall with 17. She also had four service aces.
The sophomore setting tandem of Kailey Hackett (24) and Carter Kennedy (20) as always paced the Bulldog attack. Kennedy also had nine digs.
Sabina Szmajduch was the top performer in the match for Delaware State with 19 kills.

Keeping it 100
After UNC Asheville's win over Delaware State, Guthrie now has exactly 100 kills on the year. Guthrie's 21 kills in the win over Delaware State neared her career-best in a single match set last year against Charleston Southern of 25. She also went over 600 kills for her career in the win over Delaware State as she now has 619.
In the Series
Friday's matchup marked the first time since 2004 that UNC Asheville and Delaware State had faced off. The Bulldogs now own a 2-0 all-time series lead.
Closing Out The Henson's Hawk Invite
The Bulldogs will next play the host Hawks of UMES at noon on Saturday, Sept. 16, before closing out their time in Princess Anne, Md., with a match against Coppin State at 4 p.m.
