Going Back to Cali
UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell spent 16 years at Loyola Marymount as an assistant coach where he helped lead the Lions to two WCC titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances. Former Loyola Marymount standout and current UNC Asheville men's soccer Director of Operations/Analytics Tyler Krumpe is also the son of 19th-year LMU head coach Paul Krumpe. In addition, UNC Asheville's Joe LaCasto, Kyle Adams, Trenton Klatte and Richie Lee call the Golden State home and UNC Asheville assistant coach Matt Tellez played his college soccer at Sacramento State.Â
"We're super-excited to visit California. Obviously, LMU holds a special place not only in my heart, but in my family's heart. My kids are going out to see the game, so that's pretty cool. Obviously, having Coach Krumpe's son, Tyler, on our staff, who I coached as a player, there is a pretty symbiotic relationship between our two programs. I think that is a pretty positive thing and it speaks pretty highly of the way LMU goes about its business. We try to mirror a lot of the things here that we are doing based on the successful model that they've had." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
Pura Vida – Costa Rica to North Carolina to California
This will be the second time in the last few months that UNC Asheville men's soccer and LMU will be in the same place. The two teams as part of UNC Asheville's trip to Costa Rica in May met up on May 18 for lunch in a hotel restaurant in Costa Rica just after the Bulldogs visited La Fortuna Waterfall and just before Asheville secured a 2-0 win over A.D. San Carlos later that evening. To read the blog of Thursday, May 18, by Tyler Moore, Brandon Millington and Brendan O'Dowd, please visit HERE.

The Bulldogs
UNC Asheville men's soccer will be looking for its first positive result of the season in its trip to the West Coast. The Bulldogs dropped their season opener, 3-0, at Marshall on Friday, Aug. 25.
"Obviously, we were a little disappointed in the result against Marshall, but we watched the tape and there were some pretty good things that we did. We were a little disjointed, which is kind of to be expected at this point in the season, but we did some nice things. We had a good week of training, so it's a great test for us." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
Scouting LMU and UC Irvine
Loyola Marymount (0-2) opened its regular season last week by traveling to Seattle. The Lions fell, 1-0, to Seattle University in their season opener on Friday, Aug. 25, before closing out their first weekend of the year with a 2-0 loss to the University of Washington.
UC Irvine (1-1) started its season with a narrow 2-1 loss at No. 11 Louisville on Friday, Aug. 25. The Anteaters followed that up with a 5-2 victory over Northern Kentucky on Sunday, Aug. 27, in Highland Heights, Ky.
"We are playing two very good soccer teams on Friday and Sunday that are very well-coached with a ton of individual talent and a really good sense of who they are as a group. These are two great challenges to go on the road and play these two programs. Coach Krumpe has obviously done a great job at LMU and Coach Raz is a fantastic coach and he is very early in his Irvine career. They (UC Irvine) had a great opening weekend. They gave Louisville all they could handle at Louisville, but then they went to Northern Kentucky and were up 4-nil in the first 18 minutes. We've got our work cut out for us, but I think that our team seems to be in a good place. I think that we've got to continue moving the needle forward in terms of imprinting our style of play on the game. I thought we were a little bit reactionary against Marshall and we allowed them to get on the front foot and they did what any well-coached side will do at home. We've got to be very mindful that we start the game in a fashion that not only gets us into our rhythm, but also disrupts both LMU's and Irvine's rhythm." – Head Coach Mathes Mennell
