Day 5 in Costa Rica started with a great breakfast in our new hotel where it is easy to wake up since there is a massive volcano right outside our room. We then hopped on the bus for a quick ride to the La Fortuna Waterfall. To get to the waterfall, we had to descend 500 steps, which didn't seem like much on the way down. We have some great waterfalls in Asheville, but they all pale in comparison to this one. The length that the water has to fall creates massive amounts of spray and wind that can be felt from far away. As we entered the chilling water and got closer to the falls, it became extremely hard to stand with the force of the water. After the strenuous hike back up the steps, we took the bus back to the hotel. After a short rest period, we went down to the hotel restaurant and met up with the LMU soccer team for lunch. Then it was time to pack up and head out for our third match. After an hour and a half bus ride, we arrived at the stadium. Our opponent was San Carlos. We started the game well and created chances early. By halftime, we had a comfortable 2-0 lead over our opponents. It was smooth sailing in the second half, and we picked up our first win of the trip. After the bus ride back to the hotel, we enjoyed a great team dinner and then we were given the night off to enjoy the hot springs at our hotel.

Match Report from head coach Mathes Mennell - A.D. San Carlos

1st Half First XI:  Tyler Moore (GK), Sam Holton, Zack Compton, Carter Phillips, Brendan O'Dowd, Andrew Lawrence, Brandon Millington, Joe LaCasto, Richie Lee, Elvis Boateng and Jackson Allen

First Half Highlights: The Bulldogs started the game in a familiar fashion by pressing the game. The attacking mindset immediately created a chance as Richie Lee hit the crossbar from a nifty pass from Elvis Boateng. The Bulldogs continued this pressure and were rewarded in the 14th-minute minute as Boateng finished off a sublime backheel flick from a Richie Lee corner kick.

The first half saw the Bulldogs firing on all cylinders and creating some very attractive moments. The Bulldogs found the net in the 38th-minute as Ben Chapal scored his second goal of the trip as he tapped home a pass from Andrew Lawrence. The assist was Lawrence's third of the trip.

Second Half First XI: Dakotah Bainter (GK), Trenton Klatte, Zack Compton, Hayden Poell, Kyle Adams, Frank Morales, Andrew Lawrence, Austin Howard, Ryan Enriquez, Ben Chapal and Dino Dziergas

The second half featured more attacking play from the Bulldogs and a very physical second half from San Carlos. The home side were very much on the mind of the referee as the San Carlos #9 was sent off in the 73rd-minute for his second yellow of the half.

The Bulldogs created a dearth of chances and were not threatened until a scramble in the box resulted in a penalty kick for San Carlos in the 85th-minute. However, the shot was put over the bar and the Bulldogs saw out the rest of the match to complete the 2-0 victory.

Head Coach Mathes Mennell offered the following thoughts after the match: "Overall, I'm really pleased with the entire approach to the match for our group. We were good in possession, dangerous in the final third and very composed defensively. The only thing I would have liked to see was for us to score the third goal and put the match to bed early in the second half. That being said, we were creating chances, so that clinical finishing is coming."
