Tietjen Named to Big South All-Conference Honorable Mention and All-Academic Team

LEXINGTON, S.C. – UNC Asheville senior center fielder Joe Tietjen earned his second Big South All-Conference honor Monday night as he picked up All-Big South Conference Honorable Mention plaudits as well as his second Big South Conference All-Academic Team honor. The annual awards were announced at a banquet held at Lexington High School to kick off the 2017 Big South Conference Baseball Championship Presented by Hardee's.
Last season, Tietjen earned second-team honors as well as his first All-Academic Team award. Prior to the 2017 season, Tietjen was named to the Perfect Game Preseason Big South All-Conference Team by the staff of Perfect Game and was listed in the top-five of the top prospects of the conference for this year's graduating class.
A senior from Waxhaw, N.C., Tietjen is currently in the top-10 in program history in 10 offensive categories, including eight for career stats and two for single season stats. He enters this week's tournament fifth all-time with 42 career stolen bases. He is also sixth with 138 runs scored and tied for sixth with seven career triples, seventh with 320 total bases, eighth with 121 runs batted in, ninth with 42 doubles and tied for ninth with 21 career home runs. He also cracked the top-10 for at-bats last weekend against Gardner-Webb and sits 10th with 673 career at-bats. This season, Tietjen is tied for sixth all-time for triples in a single season (4) and is sixth out-right with 19 stolen bases.
Tietjen, who boasts a 3.347 GPA as a Health and Wellness major, is second on the team with a .266 batting average. So far this season, he has amassed 17 multi-hit games, nine multi-run games, seven multi-RBI games and four games with multiple stolen bases. This season, he has had two streaks of at least seven games where he collected at least one hit. On Feb. 24, he batted in seven runs against Dayton and he batted in another four on Mar. 29 against Western Carolina.
Tietjen is tied for second in the conference with four triples and fifth with 19 stolen bases. He is also tied for seventh in NCAA Division I with five outfield assists.
The UNC Asheville baseball team will make its first appearance in the Big South Conference Championships since the 2012 campaign this week. The Bulldogs are the No. 6 seed in the tournament held at Lexington County Baseball Stadium and will face off against third-seeded Presbyterian in game-two of the tournament, Tuesday, May 23. First pitch will be approximately 45 minutes following the conclusion of game-one of the tournament, which gets underway at 9:30 a.m.
