CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team has earned the No. 6 seed heading into the 2017 Big South Conference Baseball Championships Presented by Hardee's next week at the Lexington County Baseball Stadium in Lexington, S.C. The seedings were announced by the league office Saturday evening.

UNC Asheville's berth into the 2017 league tournament marks the first time since the 2012 campaign that the Bulldogs have earned a berth into the tourney. The Bulldogs will make their 16th overall appearance in the league tournament.

UNC Asheville, Radford and Gardner-Webb finished tied for fifth-place with matching 11-13 records in league action. Because Gardner-Webb did not play Radford, the first tie breaker was records against conference opponents. Since GWU was swept by No. 1 Winthrop this season, they fall to the No. 7 seed. Since Radford won the head-to-head matchup against UNC Asheville, the Highlanders claim the No. 5 seed.

It is the sixth time the Bulldogs (23-30, 11-13 Big South) have earned the No. 6 seed in the league tournament. Heading into next week, UNC Asheville is 10-9 all-time as the 6-seed, including winning the 2006 crown and finishing second in 1991.

UNC Asheville will open the Big South Conference Baseball Championships by playing No. 3 seed Presbyterian College in the second game of the tournament on Tuesday, May 23. The tournament is double elimination.

From the Big South Conference:
For the first time since 2003, Winthrop is the No. 1 seed in the 2017 Big South Baseball Championship presented by Hardee's, which will be contested May 23-27 at Lexington County Stadium in Lexington, S.C.  The Eagles captured their first outright regular-season championship since 2003 and fourth overall.

Winthrop, which finished the Big South season in first-place with a 17-7 conference record, will attempt to win its fifth Big South Championship and first since 2005. The Big South Championship tournament is a double-elimination format and features eight squads competing for the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals -- highlighted by a "Winner-Take-All" championship game on Saturday, May 27 that will be televised live on ESPNU for the second straight year.  First pitch is at 3:00pm.

Liberty finished a game behind Winthrop at 16-8 and earned the No. 2 seed.  The Flames will seek their first tournament crown since the 2013 season.  Presbyterian College will be in the same pod, as it earned the No. 3 seed with a 15-9 league record.  The Blue Hose have qualified for the Big South's postseason for just the second time and the No. 3 seed marks their highest.

High Point finished the regular-season with a 13-11 league mark to claim the No. 4 seed.  The Panthers closed the year with a series win over Maryland and will seek their first tournament title in program history.

Radford, UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb finished tied for fifth-place at 11-13.  Because the three teams did not play each other in 2017, the first tiebreaker of head-to-head results among the tied teams cannot be used.  The next step is record vs. conference opponents occupying the highest position in the final standings in which the tied teams played the same amount of times.  All three teams played first-place Winthrop.  Radford and Asheville finished 1-2 against the Eagles, while GWU went 0-3.  The Runnin' Bulldogs slide down to the No. 7 seed, and the tiebreak is reduced to a two-way tie between the Highlanders and Bulldogs.  RU garnered the higher seed based on its 2-1 series win over UNC Asheville -- slotting the Highlanders as the No. 5 seed and the Bulldogs landing in the No. 6 spot.

Campbell rounds out the tournament field at the No. 8 seed, as the Fighting Camels closed the regular season with a 10-14 league mark.  Charleston Southern and Longwood finished behind CU with a 9-15 and 7-17 conference records, respectively, and did not qualify for the tournament.

The Champion begins Tuesday, May 23 with four games scheduled -- No. 2 Liberty vs. No. 7 Gardner-Webb at 9:30 a.m., No. 3 Presbyterian vs. No. 6 UNC Asheville 45 minutes after Game 1, No. 1 Winthrop vs. No. 8 Campbell at 4:30 p.m. and No. 4 High Point vs. No. 5 Radford 45 minutes after Game 3.

The tournament will continue with Games 5-8 on Wednesday, May 24, Games 9-10 on Thursday, May 25, Games 11-12 and any if necessary contests on Friday, May 26.  The championship game will be played Saturday, May 27 at 3:00 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU for the second straight season.

The complete Conference Championship schedule appears below, and all games Tuesday-Thursday will be video streamed live for free on the Big South Network.  Friday's action will be carried on ESPN3.

BULLDOG BITES
PLENTY LEFT TO PLAY FOR: Saturday's game may have marked the end of the regular season, but it does not mean the end of the campaign for the Bulldogs as UNC Asheville has earned a spot in the 2017 Big South Conference Championship Presented by Hardee's held at Lexington County Baseball Stadium in Lexington, S.C. The berth into the post-season league tournament marks the first time since the 2012 season that UNC Asheville has advanced to the tournament.

SWEET 16: UNC Asheville will be making its 16th appearances in the Big South Conference Championships. In the previous 15 trips, the Bulldogs went 19-28, claiming the 2006 championship and finishing runners-up in 1991.

BEST FINISH IN SOME TIME: With their 11 wins this season, the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville have posted the most conference wins since winning 12 Big South Conference contests in 2012 en route to finishing sixth in the league standings. Coincidentally, 2012 was also the last time UNC Asheville earned a berth into the Big South Conference Championships.

20-WIN SEASON: The Bulldogs are guaranteed to finish the year with at least 20 wins for the second time in the Scott Friedholm era. The Bulldogs' 23 wins are the most by a UNC Asheville team since the 2012 squad finished the year with 25 wins.

BULLDOGS WINNING 20+ GAMES: In the NCAA Division I era, only head coaches Bill Hillier, Matt Myers and Willie Stewart recorded more 20-win seasons with the Bulldogs as all three had three 20-win campaigns. Hillier's 1997, 1998 and 1999 teams finished with 20, 27 and 21 wins, respectively. Myers' 2002, 2003 and 2004 squads recorded 21, 27 and 26 wins. Stewart's 2006 Big South Conference Tournament Champions, 2007 and 2008 teams recorded 28, 22 and 24 wins. Current skipper Scott Friedholm is the only other Bulldog head coach to have multiple 20-win campaigns. The 23 wins is the ninth-most wins in program history for a single season. The 2006 team set the standard with 28 wins while the 1990 squad went 25-25.

UNC ASHEVILLE IN THE BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS: UNC Asheville made seven straight appearances in the league tournament from 1998 to 2004. After a one-season hiatus in 2005, the Bulldogs made three straight appearances from 2006 to 2008 and then advanced to the conference tourney in 2010 and 2012. UNC Asheville also earned berths in the 1990, 1991 and 1992 tournaments.
