Bulldogs Take Series Over Longwood with 7-3 Victory Behind Troost’s Big Day

05.14.2017 | Baseball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind multi-hit outings by freshmen Chris Troost and Tyler Serricchio, the UNC Asheville baseball team bounced back from Saturday's disappointing loss to take a crucial Big South Conference series 2-1 over Longwood. The Bulldogs claimed a 7-3 victory in Sunday's series and home finale at Greenwood Field as Troost and Serricchio combined to go 5-for-7 with two runs batted in and three runs scored.

Troost led the way with a 3-for-3 day at the plate that included a double, two runs batted in and a run scored. Serricchio went 2-for-4 with both of his hits being doubles. Serricchio also scored a pair of the Bulldogs' seven runs.

Longwood (18-32, 6-15 Big South) started off the same way they had in the previous two games of the series: edging out to an early lead. This time, the Lancers plated two runs in the top of the second.

It didn't take UNC Asheville (21-28, 10-11 Big South) long to start chipping away at the deficit as senior Kyle Carruthers scored off a wild pitch in the bottom of the second.

The Bulldogs then took the lead for good in the third when fellow senior Justin Woods doubled to right field, scoring Troost and Carmine Pagano.

Troost drove in an insurance run in the fourth when he doubled to center field, scoring Serricchio.

Longwood made several attempts to retake the lead late in the going and pulled to within one run in the top of the eighth, but the Bulldogs stood firm and scored three runs to re-pad the lead.

Freshman Brandon Lankford led off the scoring drive with a double to right-center field, scorring Serricchio and Andrew Friedholm before Troost drove in his second run of the day with a single to left-center field, giving Lankford enough time to cruise home from third.

Troost's single was even more impressive given the fact that Longwood brought the left fielder in to play just off second base, protecting the middle. However, Troost's shot was just out of reach of the left fielder and found its way into left-center.

In total, five different Bulldogs registered an extra-base knock, including senior Joe Tietjen. Tietjen rocketed a triple off the fence in right-center field to earn his fourth three-bag hit of the season. He now has seven for his career and is tied for sixth all-time in the program history.

Senior southpaw Spencer Orr started the game on the mound for UNC Asheville and pitched 4.2 innings, scattering six hits and four strikeouts before giving way to Nick Boyles. Boyles (W, 1-5) pitched just over an inning and gave up just one hit to earn his first win on the year. Eric Whitecavage came on with a one-run lead and the tying run on first to earn his second save on the year. Austin Fahr threw just one pitch to record the final out of the sixth inning and Kole Harris chipped in for an inning and two thirds.

Longwood starter Zach Potojecki (L, 2-7) pitched 5.1 innings and gave up seven hits and four runs before being relieved by Michael Catlin and Devin Gould.

BULLDOG BITES
MOTHER'S DAY: During the fourth inning of Sunday's game, UNC Asheville held a special Mother's Day recognition for the UNC Asheville baseball mothers in attendance. The players, as well as head coach Scott Friedholm's son Cooper and assistant coach Johnathan Johnston, presented the moms with flowers at home plate.

TIETJEN'S TRIPLE: Senior Joe Tietjen rocketed a triple off the fence in right-center field during the game to earn his fourth three-bag hit of the season. He now has seven for his career and is tied for sixth all-time in the program history.

EYE ON THE STANDINGS: With both Radford and UNC Asheville going 2-1 this weekend, the two remain tied for fifth in the league heading into the final weekend of the season with Radford holding the edge over the Bulldogs with the 2-1 series win earlier this season. Behind them, Gardner-Webb sits seventh with a 9-12 league mark and Charleston Southern ends the Big South Conference campaign with a 9-14 ledger. Campbell sits ninth with an 8-13 record in Big South Conference play and Longwood remains 10th with a 6-15 league record. High Point has also finished the league schedule with a 13-11 mark, sitting behind Presbyterian with a 13-7 reccord.

UP NEXT
UNC Asheville will now play the final four games of the regular-season on the road. The Bulldogs first travel to East Tennessee State on Tuesday, May 16, for a 6 p.m. game before trekking to Gardner-Webb next weekend for the final Big South Conference series of the year.
