Bulldogs Turn in Impressive Performances During Final Day of VertKlasse Meeting

HIGH POINT, N.C.—The UNC Asheville track and field teams concluded competition at the VertKlasse Meeting on Saturday at Vert Stadium, turning in a host of impressive performances on both the men's and women's side.

The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Kayli Nichols, Argia Gibson, Desire Brown, and Kamryn DeCarmo blazed to a second place finish with a time of 3:56.04, the third best time in school history.

In the men's 400 meters, Tyree McFalling recorded the third fastest time in school history with a mark of 49.91.

Jasmine Cox won heat No. 3 in the women's 100 meters with a time of 12.64.

The men's 4x400 squad turned in a solid sixth-place finish with a time of 3:23.05.

In the men's 800 meters, David Hager ran a personal-best time of 1:57.69 to finish 10th in the morning competition. Nichols placed fifth in the women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.01. She also won her heat in the 100 meter hurdles with a mark of 14.34.

In the field events, Gibson placed 22nd in the women's triple jump with a best attempt of 10.76 meters, while Chris McKoy finished 29th in the men's triple jump with a best effort of 12.43 meters.

ABOUT THE EVENT: The VertKlasse Meeting has been hosted by High Point for nine straight years. This year the meet featured almost 1,600 athletes from 45 different schools, including teams from several Big South Conference institutions: Campbell, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Liberty, Radford and UNC Asheville.
 
ABOUT THE TRACK: Belk Track at Vert Stadium is an eight-lane Benyon surface with wide-radius turns. The track area has field event space for the high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump events. An additional throwing area was constructed in 2011, providing areas for shot put, discus and javelin competition.

PRESEASON PICKS: The Big South Conference released its 2017 Outdoor Track & Field Preseason Polls on Thursday, March 23. The Asheville men's team was picked to finish seventh while the women's squad was picked to finish eighth. Liberty University was picked first in both the men's and women's polls.

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE AWARDS: Two Bulldogs picked up big awards at the conclusion of the Big South Indoor Championships with Matthew Harding tying for league Freshman of the Year accolades and Hunter Koike being tabbed as the men's track and field Scholar Athlete of the Year.

UP NEXT: The Bulldog men and women will next travel to Cullowhee, N.C., to compete in the Beynon Sports Catamount Classic. The meet will be hosted by Western Carolina April 14-15.
