Mock Signs Promising Duo During Early Signing Period

11.09.2017 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – As part of National Signing Week, UNC Asheville women's basketball head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick signed a promising duo – Skye Green and Evonna McGill – to join the Bulldog squad for the 2018-19 season.

"Skye and Evonna are the perfect fit for both our academic and athletic needs in the 2018 class," said Mock Kirkpatrick. "Our recruiting process was very streamlined and focused last year to sign two post players. We have been recruiting both of these young ladies since September of their junior year and our staff did a wonderful job of staying consistent in building relationships and communicating with both of them. Not only will Skye and Evonna bring us some much needed depth and skill in the post, they both have outstanding academic credentials, high character and are very fun people to be around."

"I want to thank my entire staff and also our current student-athletes for being so welcoming to all of the prospective student-athletes that come on campus," Mock Kirkpatrick added. "Our current players are wonderful people to be around, and I appreciate all of their efforts to bring the right people into the program. It's certainly a group effort for us as a family."

About Skye Green16285

Green hails from Palm Coast, Fla. where she attends Flagler Palm Coast High School. The rising senior has earned three varsity letters on the basketball team while also participating on the track & field squad. While on the court, Green averaged 16 points per game including nine rebounds and three blocks during her junior season. She was part of the Flagler Palm Coast team that won back-to-back District Championships after making a run to the Final Four and to the Regional Semifinals in 2017.

Green has earned numerous accolades during her three-year stint including 2015-16 Daytona News Journal All-Area Second Team, 2016-17 Daytona News Journal Pre-season Fab Five selection and 2016-17 Daytona News Journal All-Area First Team. Last season, Green won four Player of the Year awards - Daytona News Journal Player of the Year, Volusia All-Stars Best of Preps, Spectrum Sports Breakfast of Champions Player of the Year and Flagler Coast Athletic Banquet Female Player of the Year.

Off the court, Green is a mentor for youth kids where she teaches them the fundamentals of basketball. She also won the WNZF News Radio (FLAGLER) Scholarship Award for her academic success in the classroom.

Mock's Thoughts on Skye Green

"The evolution of Skye's recruiting process absolutely confirms that she is supposed to be a Bulldog. We saw her play the summer before her junior year and took note of her athleticism and ability to play both the four and the five positions. Skye devoted herself to getting in shape last year and working on developing her game and becoming a better player. I was amazed at how much she improved when I saw her after her high school season last spring. When Skye came on her visit, we knew that she would be a great fit with her outgoing personality and the focus to do whatever it takes to be a great teammate. We are looking forward to having our second player from the state of Florida (Nadiria Evans – Gainesville, Fla.) on the roster next season."

About Evonna McGill16289

The three-sport athlete (basketball, track & field and volleyball) comes to Asheville from Lowell, N.C. as McGill is a rising senior at Ashbrook High School. Last season, she eclipsed 1,000 points in three years as a Green Wave. During that same year, she averaged 17 points while grabbing 9.6 boards. She also averaged 2.7 blocks per contest and a pair of steals during her third season. McGill posted 10 double-doubles last season including four in the conference playoffs with a broken finger.

Like Green, McGill has earned several accolades during her tenure – 2016-17 Conference Player of the Year, two-time Gaston Gazette Player of the Year (second sophomore in history to win the award), two-time All-District 10 First Team and three-time All-Conference Team. For the past two seasons, she has led the team in rebounding and during her freshman and junior seasons, she was the leading scorer. After leading the team in scoring and rebounding as a junior, she was named the Co-MVP.

Off the court, she is a member of the National Honor Society where she sports a 4.0 grade-point average. She was a scholar athlete and also attended the Wake Forest LAUNCH for Leadership Program. She has been involved in the community including being one of the founders of the peer support group Let's Be Real where it addresses social issues and takes responsibility within the community. McGill is also a Summer Teen Mentor with PASS where she mentors and reads to elementary students at a local community center.

Mock's Take on Evonna McGill

"I remember seeing Evonna play for the first time in Washington, D.C. the summer before her junior year. We saw potential immediately and added her to our depth chart. Evonna is a highly-recruited post player who was looking for the right fit and a program that would develop her, and I am glad she saw that in UNC Asheville. On her visit, she was so comfortable interacting with the girls, and she even committed before she left campus. Evonna has great post moves and can also run the floor, which fits our pace of play very well. She has a great sense of humor and a great work ethic on and off the court as well. We are excited to have the opportunity to coach her next season."
