ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It was a special day for UNC Asheville athletics on Sunday, Nov. 26.
Not only did the day end with UNC Asheville men's basketball picking up a big 20-point win over Wofford, but over the course of the day everyone was reminded just how great the past, present and future of Bulldog basketball is thanks to a unique gift.
On Sunday, Nov. 26, the Men's Basketball Head Coach's Office was renamed for Coach Bob Hartman, who was the UNC Asheville men's basketball head coach from 1962-79 and also served as the Athletics Director. He led the Bulldogs to two district championships and two appearances in the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City.
The gift for the Bob Hartman UNC Asheville Men's Basketball Head Coach's Office was made possible by the generous donation from the Batsel Family and the 1966-68 Men's Basketball Teams.
"I often participated in family activities with Coach, Mrs. Hartman, and their four daughters while at UNC Asheville," former Bulldog and 1,000-point scorer Guy Batsel said. "He was a loving and kind father who really enjoyed life away from basketball. I, too, am the fortunate father of four daughters and you can be assured that I have attempted to use Coach Hartman's fatherly skills as I raised my own. Next to my father, Coach Hartman was the most positive male influence in my life."
The Bob Hartman Men's Basketball Head Coach's Office renaming official unveiling was held before the men's basketball game against Wofford on Sunday, Nov. 26, with current head coach Nick McDevitt and the Bulldog basketball coaching staff involved along with Special Assistant to the Athletics Director for Advancement and Alumni Engagement Betsy Blose, Associate Athletics Director Terri Brne and Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone.
The daughters of former UNC Asheville men's basketball Coach Bob Hartman, Katherine Hartman and Connie Hartman, along with Coach Hartman's Grandson Steven Hartmann were also involved in addition to former UNC Asheville men's basketball standout and alum Guy Batsel and his wife, Deborah Batsel, and their daughters, Haley and Hilary Batsel.
During one of the timeouts during the game against Wofford, Guy Batsel and all involved were also honored in front of the crowd at Kimmel Arena for their efforts.
"We cannot thank Guy Batsel, his family and everyone involved enough in making this a reality," Cone said. "This is a great thing for UNC Asheville to be able to honor one of our Hall of Famers and one of the special figures in the history of our athletics department."
