CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Despite receiving the second-highest first place votes (two), the UNC Asheville women's basketball team was projected to finish fifth, which was announced on Tuesday at the Big South Conference Media Day.
"We are excited about another season of basketball starting, and media day really focuses on the enthusiasm and buzz of new beginnings," said head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. "Of course we are talking about Big South basketball, but there are so many games to be played before the opener in January."
"I am thankful for our non-conference slate so we can get prepared for the rigors of another competitive Big South season. I feel like the culture of our team has to be re-established every year, and we are in that process now. I love our kids, the energy and the effort they display consistently in practice. If they continue to bring it every day, we will be an exciting team to watch."
UNC Asheville received 65 total points highlighted by two first place votes and a third place vote.
Leading the women's preseason poll was Radford, which received the most first place votes with seven. In total the Highlanders tallied 96 points, which was 15 points ahead of second place Liberty.
The Bulldogs concluded the 2016-17 season with a 19-15 overall record, but Asheville cruised through the Big South Tournament as it won four games in four straight days. The Bulldogs nipped Presbyterian by one point in the semifinals and stole the championship title over No. 1 Radford by a lone point.
