BULLDOG BITES

CONFERENCE OPENER: Preseason favorite UNC Asheville (6-5, 0-0 Big South Conference) opens its Big South Conference schedule by welcoming Campbell (8-3, 0-0 Big South Conference) to Kimmel Arena for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

HOME SWEET HOME: Kimmel Arena is one of the toughest places to play in all of women's college basketball. This year the Bulldogs are already 4-0 at home with wins over Western Carolina, Tennessee Tech, Warren Wilson and Wofford. The strong 4-0 start at home this season follows up a performance last year where the Bulldogs were 16-2 at Kimmel Arena.

AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN: UNC Asheville is now 5-0 in games in which they score 70 or more points after the win over USC Upstate.

FORDHAM HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT: UNC Asheville dropped both of its games last week against a top-notch field at the 10th Annual Fordham Holiday Classic. In its first game at the event in the Bronx, UNC Asheville battled until the very end against ESPNW Mid-Major ninth-ranked Harvard, but it would be the Crimson who would pick up a 79-62 win over the Bulldogs. Three Bulldogs finished in double figures in Asheville's 55-42 loss to host Fordham in the consolation game of the tournament at the Rose Hill Gym.

THIRD TIME IS A CHARM: Buoyed by a 6-0 run to start the quarter the Bulldogs outscored Fordham, 17-11, in the third quarter. The Bulldogs shot 57.1 percent (8-of-14) as a team in the third quarter.

HITTING THE OFFENSIVE GLASS: In picking up a double-double with 13 rebounds and 11 points in UNC Asheville's loss to Harvard, KJ Weaver procured eight of her 13 boards on the offensive glass. As a team, Asheville collected 22 offensive rebounds against the Crimson.

SERIES: Campbell owns a 36-9 all-time series lead over UNC Asheville, but in Asheville the Bulldogs have taken six of their 22 meetings.

LEADING THE WAY: Through the end of its non-conference games on Friday, Dec. 30, UNC Asheville is presently leading the Big South Conference in scoring at 67.4 points per game. The Bulldogs led the Big South Conference in scoring last year at 68.2 points per game.

TOPS IN THE FIELD: UNC Asheville through the conclusion of its non-conference games currently leads the Big South Conference in field goal percentage with the Bulldogs shooting 42.1 percent per game as a team.

IT'S AN HONOR: Prior to the win over Wofford, Tianna Knuckles was honored for joining the prestigious 1,000-point club at UNC Asheville. One of only 105 in Big South Women's Basketball history to surpass 1,000 points, Knuckles passed the 1,000-point mark in the Bulldog win over Western Carolina on Friday, Nov. 18, at Kimmel Arena. The senior guard out of Wendell, N.C. now has 1,103 career points.

GET ON BOARD: UNC Asheville senior center KJ Weaver became the 108th player in Big South Conference women's basketball history to eclipse the 500 rebound plateau in the Bulldogs' win over Western Carolina on Nov. 18. Weaver presently has 559 rebounds in her career.

UP NEXT: UNC Asheville hits the road for the first time in Big South Conference play by traveling to Farmville, Va. to take on Longwood at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7.

QUOTABLES

"Our non-conference schedule was tougher this year for two reasons: One, we had a veteran team that was ready for more of a challenge and two, it is what was required to prepare us for the rigorous Big South slate that we have arrived upon. Mature teams are able to take a knock or two in the non-conference with the understanding that there is a greater  purpose in their preparation and growth. We will find out soon enough if we have become a tougher more conditioned team in the lead up period to Tuesday's match-up. I have no doubt that it will be a great game between us and Campbell. As usual, Coach Fisher is doing a great job with his team. Our girls are excited and ready to play well and defend our home court." - Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
