Men's Tennis Squad Voted to Finish Sixth in Big South Preseason Poll

01.11.2017 | Men's Tennis

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—The UNC Asheville men's tennis team was voted to finish sixth in the 2017 Big South Conference preseason poll, it announced earlier today by the conference office.

Winthrop was picked first in the preseason poll, receiving three of the 10 first place votes and a total of 54 points, followed by Presbyterian, Campbell, Liberty, Gardner-Webb, Asheville, Radford and Longwood.

"I think we are still a little bit of an unknown quantity," UNC Asheville men's tennis head coach Tom Hand stated.  "It's always interesting when you have so many new guys with some big shoes to fill, but I think they have learned a lot over the fall and I'm eager to see what they can do in the spring. I feel good about the leadership of our returners and I'm sure that will serve us well as we go forward."

Four lettermen return from last year's club that finished with an 11-8 overall record in 2016, all four of which were regulars for the Bulldogs.  Two of the returnees are upperclassmen, featuring two seniors in Reid Dillon and Josh Swindler.

The Bulldog roster also holds three underclassmen in sophomores Olly Cull, Henry Patten and Andrew Sinai.

In addition, Asheville welcomes three newcomers in freshmen Edward Colclough, James Massie and Majed Yousif.  Colclough is a graduate of The Priory Academy in Lincoln, UK. Massie is a graduate of Jupiter Christian School in West Palm Beach, Fla. Yousif is a graduate from Saddlebrook Prep in Wesley Chapel, Fla.

The Bulldogs open the 2017 season at home next Saturday, Jan. 21, against Mars Hill at the Asheville Racquet Club beginning at 5 p.m. Following the match against the Lions, Asheville will have a quick turnaround, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne the following day, Sunday, Jan. 22, also at the Asheville Racquet Club.
