Asheville Closes Opening Weekend With First 2016 Victory

ATHENS, Ga. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team finished their opening weekend at the Benson Hospitality Tournament 1-2 after dropping matches to Georgia (3-1) and San Francisco (3-0) and sweeping Savannah State (3-0) for their first win in 2016.
NOTABLES
-Sophomore outside hitter Cara Guthrie was named to the 2016 Benson Hospitality Tournament All-Tournament team.
-In their first match against San Francisco the Bulldog offense was led by Guthrie with 12 kills on 40 attempts, while Asheville's most efficient attacker was Shelby Erickson (.250). Gurthrie was the only Asheville hitter with kills in double digits.
- San Francisco took control of the match at the net, out-blocking the Bulldogs 7-1.
-The Bulldog defense was led by sophomore transfer Madisen Zyburt who recorded 15 digs in the three-set match.
-In their final match of the tournament, a three-set sweep of Savannah State, Asheville had four Bulldogs with at least seven attempts hit .400 or better. Gutherie led the offensive charge with 15 kills on 30 attempts. Asheville totaled 45 kills in the three-set match.
-Bulldog setters Kailey Hackett(16) and Carter Kennedy (12) combined for 36 total assists.
-Ashehville out-dug Savannah State 38-32 with two Bulldogs tallying double-digit digs: Hackett (10) and Zyburt (13).
-The Bulldogs also collected 10 service aces in their first victory of 2016.
