Asheville, N.C. - Two second half goals catapulted Tennessee Tech over UNC Asheville 2-0 on Friday night's regular season opener at Greenwood Field.

It was the regular season opener for both teams.

GAME AT A GLANCE

With the game scoreless at the half, Tennessee Tech's Abi Gearing opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the second frame. The senior midfielder and reigning First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection added one more goal into the top left of the net with just under 14 minutes left to give her team some insurance.

Tennessee Tech nearly had two additional goals as Dani Shartouny hit the crossbar with 15 minutes left in the first half, while her teammate Kalyn Pruett hit the right post on a shot with just under 13 minutes left in the game.

NOTABLES

- Tennessee Tech out-shot UNC Asheville by eight, including a 10-3 advantage in the second half.

- Caroline Houser led UNC Asheville with four total shots. Two went on goal

QUOTABLES

"It's disappointing to give up unopposed goals in shooting range," said UNC Asheville head women's soccer coach Michelle Demko. "That is a mentality we need to own, and we need to be better defending our box. Give credit to Tennessee Tech. They got into our attacking third, were dangerous and got two goals out of it. It's a long season. This is a good early opportunity to understand that our commitment on every play must match our want to be better. We will learn, grow and move forward toward our next opponent."

UP NEXT

UNC Asheville will travel to The Citadel on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match. It marks the beginning of a four-game road trip that concludes Sept. 1 at UAB. The team then returns home for a 1 p.m. tilt at Greenwood Field against Kennesaw State on Sept. 4.
