ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville begins a five-game home stand to close out its regular season schedule with midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday at Greenwood Field against SoCon foes Furman and UNC Greensboro. The home stand is part of a larger, eight games in nine day stretch for the Bulldogs.
The five-game home stand will be the second-longest of the season for the Bulldogs, who host seven consecutive games back in early March. The week and the 2016 home schedule concludes this weekend when Asheville hosts Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb.
NOTABLES
Guy Streaking: Pete Guy takes a 30 game on-base streak into the week's schedule, the second-longest in the Scott Friedhom-era behind former Bulldog Hunter Bryant's 34 game on-base streak last season. Guy has started and played in all 45 games to date this season.
The Right Guy: Guy is tied for second in the country in total base on balls with 52 entering the midweek games (two back of the national leaders) and is second in the country in base on balls per game average (1.16 per), just behind the national leader (Zack Collins, Miami (FL) – 1.21 per). He sits in fourth nationally in total times hit by pitch (18).
Eagle Eye, Bulls Eye: As a team, the Bulldogs have drawn 233 walks, ranking 18th nationally. Asheville also has a knack for getting hit, with its 61 total hit batters this season ranked in the top 30 nationally.
Free Baseball: The Bulldogs have had no issues playing extra innings this season, compiling a 3-1 record in extra innings. Two of the three extended wins have come at home (vs. N.C. Central and ETSU, while Asheville also won at BSC opponent Charleston Southern.
The Key to Success: The Bulldogs have tallied six or more runs in 14 of their 15 wins this season, while they are just 1-23 when scoring five or less runs per game.
Looking at the Opponents: Furman has six players hitting over .300 this season, with three players with 25+ RBI. UNC Greensboro features 10 players hitting over .300, including three over .400, with eight guys with 25+ RBI. This is the second meeting of the year between Asheville and Furman (Furman 8-6 win March 8), while Furman and UNC Greensboro meet in a three-game series earlier this season (2-1 UNCG series win).
