LYNCHBURG – The UNC Asheville Men's Tennis team opened conference play with a 4-3 win over Liberty University in Lynchburg.

 

The Bulldogs' win avenged a loss to Flames in their last meeting in the second round of the 2015 Big South Conference tournament.

 

NOTABLES

-The Flames delivered two doubles wins to collect the doubles point for an early lead, despite a 6-1 win from the duo Henry Patten and Josh Swindler on court two.

 

- Liberty collected the first singles win on court six (6-2, 6-0), but the Bulldogs responded with two singles wins of their own from Patten on court two (6-0,6-1) and Swindler on court four (7-5, 6-1) to tie the match 2-2.

 

-The Flames obtained the next point from a singles win on court one, but Asheville's Olly Cull was able answer with a 7-6, 6-1 win on court five. Going into the final match of the day, Asheville and Liberty were even at 3 points apiece.

 

- The final match to finish was on court three where Thomas Orestis-Panoulas was able to clench the match for Asheville with a two-set victory (7-5, 6-2).

On the win- “Great win for us today. I am very proud of the way we competed. We were behind after losing the doubles point, but we had some guys step up in a big way.”

-Following Saturday's match, Asheville will travel to Conway, South Carolina to face Coastal Carolina on Sunday, March 13 at 1:00 p.m.
