ASHEVILLE, N.C. – After UNC Asheville jumped out to a four-run lead after two innings, visiting Ohio sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run third inning to grab the lead for good as Ohio took the second game of the teams' season-opening series by a 14-8 score Saturday afternoon.

 

THE TURNING POINT

Ohio connected for five hits and three walks in the seven-run third inning before adding four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend the advantage. Asheville left a total of 11 men on base in the loss, including two runners in both the seventh and ninth innings.

 

NOTABLES

-Lucas Owens and Joe Tietjen each tallied two hits as the pair combined for four of the Bulldogs' six total hits. Tietjen drove in four RBIs, and has now driven in seven runs through the first two games of the season. Tietjen added two walks.  

 

-Pete Guy (solo home run) and Scott Kobos (double) provided the only other Asheville hits, while Bulldog batters drew eight walks.

 

-Asheville starter Jordan Fulbright did not get out of the third inning, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings of work, while Ohio starter Jake Rudnicki did not factor in the decision after being knocked for seven Bulldog runs on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. Ohio reliever Logan Jacik earned the win after 2 2/3 hitless innings out of the bullpen.

 

-After a single run by Ohio in the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs answered with Tietjen's two-run single before adding three runs in the second inning. Kobos led off the frame with a double before scoring on Lucas Owens' RBI single to highlight the inning.

 

-Ohio plated four runs on three hits in the fifth inning before Asheville answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back solo homers from Guy and Tietjen.

 

-Ohio finished with 16 hits, led by three hits apiece from Manny DeJesus, Ty Black and Rudy Rott as the visitors combined for 12 total RBI.

 

UP NEXT

-Following today's loss, the Bulldogs and Ohio wrap up the season-opening series tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch at Greenwood Field. Freshman Jordan Carr will get the start for Asheville, while senior Connor Sitz will start for Ohio.
