ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team is having one of the best seasons in program history and people are starting to take notice. The Bulldogs cracked the CollegeInsider.com Women's Mid-Major Poll at No. 25 in the latest rankings released late Tuesday night.
Asheville received 65 total points on the way to the No. 25 ranking and are the only Big South team to make the rankings, entering the poll for the first time after sitting in the 'receiving votes' the previous few weeks.
Head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick's squad downed Longwood on the road Tuesday night to stay tied with Liberty atop the Big South Conference standings at 12-2 in league play, while Asheville is now 19-4 on the season. The Bulldogs host Liberty on Saturday afternoon inside Kimmel Arena in a first place showdown.
The Women's Mid-Major Poll's voting panel is made up of 30 mid-major coaches, including a pair of coaches who have seen Asheville up close and personal this year. The Bulldogs downed Tammy George's USC Upstate team 68-59 in late-November, while Asheville has a pair of conference wins over Kevin Cook's Winthrop team (63-55 in December and 67-59 in February).
CollegeInsider started the first Mid-Major Top 25 basketball poll devoted exclusively to schools outside of the "high major" realm during the 1998-99 season. CollegeInsider has been covering online sports almost as long as online sports coverage has existed. They migrated from a print format to the web in 1996.
