BULLDOG BITES

BACK ON THE ROAD: UNC Asheville travels to Boone, N.C. to face off against Appalachian State at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21.

HOME SWEET HOME: Kimmel Arena is one of the toughest places to play in all of women's college basketball. This year the Bulldogs are already 4-0 at home with wins over Western Carolina, Tennessee Tech, Warren Wilson and Wofford. The strong 4-0 start at home this season follows up a performance last year where the Bulldogs were 16-2 at Kimmel Arena.

AT THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN: UNC Asheville is now 5-0 in games in which they score 70 or more points after the win over USC Upstate.

SERIES: This will mark the 17th meeting between UNC Asheville and Appalachian State. The Mountaineers hold a 13-3 all-time series advantage with the last meeting between the two teams coming in the 2011-12 season at Kimmel Arena in the Asheville Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011.

ABOUT APPALACHIAN STATE: The Mountaineers are 4-6 on the season and currently in the midst of a three-game losing streak. Senior guard Joi Jones (16 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game) and junior guard Madi Story (12.9 points per game and 5.6 rebounds per game) lead the way for Appalachian State.

LAST TIME OUT: For the second straight game a strong second quarter propelled the UNC Asheville women's basketball team to a victory with the Bulldogs picking up a 70-59 road win over USC Upstate at the Hodge Center on Saturday, Dec. 17. USC Upstate held a 15-13 lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, but Asheville outscored the Spartans, 27-15, in the second quarter to take a 40-30 lead into the halftime break. The Bulldogs from there would dominate the third quarter, but the Spartans would make things interesting in the fourth quarter before Asheville pulled away for the 11-point win.

LEADING THE WAY: UNC Asheville is presently leading the Big South Conference in scoring at 73.2 points per game. The Bulldogs led the Big South Conference in scoring last year at 68.2 points per game.

SPARTANBURG SATURDAY SWEEP: It's now two straight wins on a Saturday for UNC Asheville over a team from Spartanburg. Last Saturday, Dec. 10, the Bulldogs tallied an 84-65 win over Wofford at Kimmel Arena before picking up the 70-59 road win over USC Upstate on Saturday, Dec. 17.

DEFENSIVE PROWESS: The Bulldogs forced USC Upstate into 19 turnovers with Asheville scoring 24 points off of the turnovers.

FLIRTING WITH HISTORY: In UNC Asheville's resounding win over Wofford, Khaila Webb posted 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting.  Webb just missed on a triple-double in the game as she also had eight rebounds and six assists to go along with her 22 points.

IT'S AN HONOR: Prior to the win over Wofford, Tianna Knuckles was honored for joining the prestigious 1,000-point club at UNC Asheville. One of only 105 in Big South Women's Basketball history to surpass 1,000 points, Knuckles passed the 1,000-point mark in the Bulldog win over Western Carolina on Friday, Nov. 18, at Kimmel Arena. The senior guard out of Wendell, N.C. now has 1,067 career points.

GET ON BOARD: UNC Asheville senior center KJ Weaver became the 108th player in Big South Conference women's basketball history to eclipse the 500 rebound plateau in the Bulldogs' win over Western Carolina on Nov. 18. Weaver presently has 536 rebounds in her career.

UP NEXT: UNC Asheville will travel to the Bronx to play in the 10th Annual Fordham Holiday Classic on Thursday, Dec. 29, and Friday, Dec. 30. The Bulldogs will commence things in the tournament by facing off against Harvard at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, at Rose Hill Gym.

QUOTABLES

"We have a quicker turnaround to get ready for App State than what the team is used to for the past three opponents. It was a step in the right direction to play well for the better part of an away game on Saturday. App State is well-coached and aggressive. We will need to value possession as well as rebound the ball well at their place. It will be an exciting game and we are looking forward to beginning this home and home series." - Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick
