Bulldog Track Wraps Up Season at Big South Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The final day of the 2015 Big South Championships saw UNC Asheville track & field athletes turn in four top-five finishes, two new personal best times and a new school record on Saturday.

 

 

Kelsie Rubino turned in the highest Bulldog finish on Saturday, placing fourth in the women's 800 meter run finals with her time of 2:16.79, while she also set a new personal best time of 4:39.58 on the way to a sixth place finish in the women's 1,500 meter race.

 

 

Fellow Bulldog Alyssa Lashway was right behind Rubino in the 800, finishing fifth with her time of 2.17.11, while teammate Sarah Heisner finished just behind Rubino in the 1,500 with her time of 4:43.75 for an eighth place finish.

 

 

Kassandra Pierre finished fifth with a time of 1:02.40 in the women's 400 meter hurdles finals. The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Pierre, Argia Gibson, Hickey and Anna Gelbach finished fifth with their time of 48.04 to eclipse the school record. The same four runners also produced a new school record time of 3:52.88 in the women's 4x400 meters later in the afternoon.

 

 

The Bulldog runners – Erin Dalton (10th, 18:31.87), Kasey Briggs (13th, 18:53.69) and Heisner (19th, 19:17.83) – competed in the women's 5,000 meter finals, while Gibson finished 13th with her distance of 11.01 meters in the women's triple jump finals.

 

 

The high men's finisher of the game was Chase Stevens' sixth place finish in the 800 meter finals, turning in a time 1:56.48.

 

 

The men's 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams each finished seventh in their races, with the 4x100 team of Jason Perry, Joe McNamera, Chilton Birdwhistell and Stevens finishing in 46.01, while the 4x400 team (Stevens, Perry, Birdwhistell and Patrick Osborne) turned in a time of 3:31.11.

 

 

Andy Thornburg finished 10th in the men's 1,500 meter run with his time of 4:00.93, followed by Birdwhistell in 12th place with his 4:03.65 time. Thornburg also ran in the 5,000 meter final, finishing with a time of 16:11.31 in 14th place.

 

 

The women's team wrapped up the Championships in ninth place overall with 35 points, while the men finished seventh with eight points.
