Bulldog Track Advances Friday, Prepare for Saturday Finals

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track and field teams had a light day of action at day two of 2015 Big South Championships on Friday, advancing to the finals in a pair of events.

 

 

A pair of Bulldog runners qualified for Saturday's finals in the women's 800 meter run. Junior Kelsie Rubino finished fourth in Friday's prelims, turning in a time of 2:16.73, while fellow junior Alyssa Lashway's time of 2:16.91 gave her an eighth place finish.

 

 

Sophomore Chase Stevens turned in an eighth place finish in the men's 800 meter run prelims with his time of 1:55.47 to advance to tomorrow's finals.

 

 

Asheville runners also turned in three new personal bests on Friday. Argia Gibson's 12.29 second time in the women's 100 meter dash prelims gave her a new best in that race, while Jason Perry's 1:58.86 time was a new best for him as well. Zoe Hickey (58.00) and Anna Gelbach (58.91) also grabbed new PRs in the prelims of the women's 400 meter dash.

 

 

Saturday's final day of the Championships features 12 Bulldogs in seven events, including Gibson in the triple jump competition and Kassandra Pierre in the women's 400 meter hurdles. Rubino and Lashway will compete in the women's 800 meter finals, while four Asheville athletes – Sarah Heisner, Casey Greenwalt, Kasey Briggs and Erin Dalton – will all run in the women's 5,000 meter run.

 

 

Chilton Birdwhistell will compete in the men's 1,500 meter race, while Andy Thornburg will run in both the men's 1,500 meter and men's 5,000 meter races.

 

 

Through two days of action, the Asheville women sit in seventh place with 12 team points, while the men are in seventh place with one point.
