HIGH POINT, N.C. – The visiting UNC Asheville baseball team managed just five hits in Sunday's Big South Conference series finale, falling 11-3 on the road against High Point.
The Bulldogs (21-30, 5-16 Big South Conference) saw Kyle Carruthers collect two hits and drive in all three runs in the afternoon, while Tommy Houmard also notched two hits in the loss. Hunter Bryant had the only other Asheville hit, moving his reached base streak up to 30 consecutive games.
For High Point (25-23, 12-9 BSC), the hosts plated multiple runs in four different innings and had four players notch multiple hits on their way to collecting 14 total hits as a team.
Asheville starter Lucas Clarke was saddled with the loss, falling to 4-8 on the year after allowing four runs on five hits with three walks in the opening four innings.
A leadoff single and an RBI ground out put High Point on the board in the first inning before the hosts added two runs in the second on a two out, two-run double down the left field line.
The Panthers pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fourth before the Bulldogs responded in the fifth, with Carruthers driving in Derek Smith with his RBI double into left center field.
The hosts then added four more runs over the fifth and sixth frames to widen their margin before a three-run eighth inning pushed the lead to 10 runs.
Carruthers cut into the deficit with his two run homer in the top of the ninth, but the Bulldogs would get nothing else.
The Bulldogs travel to Knoxville on Tuesday night to face Tennessee in their final non-conference matchup of 2015 before returning home for a final Big South Conference series against Radford beginning on Thursday.
