ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's tennis team will play an important match in terms of seeding on Thursday afternoon when they travel to Boiling Springs to take on the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs in the season finale at the Webb Tennis Complex.
Both teams enter the match with a pair of conference wins, and the winner will secure the all-important head-to-head tiebreaker for seeding purposes. Asheville is 10-7 overall this season and 2-5 in league play, having dropped its last three matches. Gardner-Webb brings an 8-11 record into the match and a 2-4 mark in the conference.
Alex Croker and Brett Landau are the top pairing for the Blue & White in doubles play. They boast a 9-7 record at the top flight. Daniel Kripak and Josh Swindler have been the primary pairing at No. 3 for much of the year, posting a record of 7-4 overall and a 4-3 mark in conference matches.
At the top flight, Kripak has been on a roll, winning his last three dual matches and improving his overall record to 10-6 and 3-3 in the league. Croker also has double-digits victories in singles (10-5) with a 6-3 mark at the fourth flight. Asheville has been strongest this season at No. 4 with a 12-4 record.
The Bulldogs can wrap up the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament with a win. If the Blue & White are the No. 7 seed, they will get an extra day's rest and play on Sunday, April 19 at 12:00 p.m. If Asheville remains the eight seed, they will play on Saturday, April 18 at 9:00 a.m.
Coach Tom Hand's club will be the hosts for the 2015 Big South Tennis Championships beginning on Wednesday, April 15 with the women's tournament and continuing on April 18 with the start of the men's tournament. All matches are scheduled to be played at the Asheville Racquet Club.
