ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team plated four runs in the seventh inning to take the lead Saturday, but the visiting Longwood Lancers scored four runs of their own over the final two innings to grab an 11-9 Big South Conference victory.
The Bulldogs (18-26, 4-14 BSC) took a two-run lead with the four-run seventh inning, keyed by Tommy Houmard's bases clearing triple, part of the senior's three hit afternoon.
Longwood (18-24, 7-11 BSC) responded with two runs in the top of the eighth via a wild pitch and RBI single to tie the game before a two-run single in the ninth gave the visitors the lead for good.
Hunter Bryant finished 3-for-3 on the afternoon with four RBI, including a double and his 10th home run of the season.
Asheville reliever Adam Spracklin, the fourth Bulldog pitcher of the afternoon, was saddled with the loss, allowing the two ninth inning runs.
The Bulldogs had a pair of big scoring innings in the game, plating three runs in the fourth and four runs in the seventh. The fourth frame saw Bryant's RBI double and an RBI single from Lucas Owens, while the seventh included Houmard's three-run triple down the right field line and a sacrifice fly from Bryant to bring in the final run.
Asheville is off until next Friday night when they host regional rival Western Carolina at 6:00 p.m. at Greenwood Field. The teams will then travel to Cullowhee and play at Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
