Personal Bests Continue to Fall for Bulldog Runners

CULLOWEE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track and field squads wrapped up a busy three days at the Catamount Classic on Saturday, with Bulldog athletes coming away with five new personal records and a pair of school records at Western Carolina.

 

 

Overall, the Bulldogs competed in 15 total events, with at least one participant or team finishing inside the top 15 in 12 events, while Asheville athletes notched seven finishes inside the top 10.

 

 

The highlight of the day was Argia Gibson's win in the women's long jump, as she finished with a mark of 5.67 meters in the finals. Gibson also set a pair of school records in the preliminary rounds on Saturday as well. On the track, Gibson notched a ninth place finish with her time of 12.60 in the 100 meter dash.

 

 

Kassandra Pierre came in second place in the women's 400 meter hurdles with her time of 1:02.04, while all four Bulldogs placed inside the top 15 in the women's 1500 meter run. Alyssa Lashway let the pack with a new personal best time of 4:54.19 in ninth, followed moments later by Sarah Heisner (4:55.96, 10th), Erin Dalton (4:58.27, 11th) and Scarlett Beamon 5:02.72, 14th).

 

 

Both of the Bulldog women's 4 x 400 meter relay teams finished inside the top-15, with the 'A' team of Zoe Hickey, Anna Gelbach, Pierre and Lashway finishing fourth with their time of 4:00.13 and the 'B' team of Kelsie Rubino, Casey Greenwalt, Maddie Lowe and Beamon had a time of 4:14.68 in 11th place.

 

 

Rubino also grabbed a new personal best in the women's 800 meter run, finishing sixth with her time of 2:16.41, while Lowe (2:24.62, 13th) also was inside the top 15. Marissa Banks set a new personal best with her 19:11.98 (12th place) in the women's 5,000 meter run.

 

 

The men's action was highlighted in the 800 meter run that featured three Bulldogs inside the top 10, led by Andy Thornburg's new best time of 1:55.51 as he finished fourth. Patrick Osborne (1:56.48) and Chase Stevens (1:56.71) finished step for step in seventh and eighth, respectively.

 

 

Keenan Devaney set a new personal best with his 11.60 time in the men's 100 meter dash, while he also notched top-15 finish in the long jump with his distance of 6.02 meters.

 

 

In the men's 1500 meter run, David Hager (4:15.11, 13th) and Ryan Catrine (4:15.83, 15th) were stride for stride, while Dominic Collichio (4:20.72, 20th) was right behind them as well.

 

 

Both Bulldog teams will travel down to Atlanta for the second time this season to compete in the Georgia Tech Invitational next weekend at the George C. Griffin Track.
