CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team fell victim to a pair of big innings by host Presbyterian College on Friday, falling 8-3 in the series opener.

After Presbyterian (19-15, 1-9 Big South Conference) plated the first run of the afternoon before the Bulldogs (16-19, 3-7 BSC) came back with two runs in the top of the second inning to take the early lead, but saw PC score four runs in the fifth and three final runs in the eighth for the win.

The Bulldogs finished with just three hits in the contest – one apiece from Joe Tietjen, Hunter Bryant and Tommy Houmard – as Lucas Clarke was saddled with his fifth loss on the mound, allowing five runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Overall, the Blue Hose notched just five hits but drew eight hits in the win.

Presbyterian took the lead on an RBI ground out in the top of the first inning, but saw the advantage disappear in the second inning on Houmard's tw0-run homer to right field that gave Asheville the lead.

Asheville would push the lead to 3-1 with Tietjen's solo homer down the left field line in the fifth inning, only to see the hosts respond with four runs in the bottom of the frame using a bases loaded walk, an RBI groundout, a throwing error and a wild pitch.

Presbyterian added three runs in the eighth on an RBI double, passed ball and RBI sacrifice fly to secre the win.

The teams are back at it tomorrow afternoon in game two, set for a 2 p.m. first pitch. A pair of left-handers will square off, as Joe Zayatz is scheduled to get the start for the Bulldogs and Beau Dees will get the ball for Presbyterian.
