Bulldog Baseball Plays Furman Twice This Week
03.09.2015 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team begins a two-game series with Furman at home on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. They'll play the second game at Furman on Wednesday starting at 5 p.m.
The Bulldogs are 6-8 on the season and have done a nice job of winning close games in the early portions of the 2015 campaign. Asheville is 6-2 in games decided by three runs or less. The Dogs went 2-2 last week with an 8-6 victory over ETSU and a 2-1 triumph over LaSalle sandwiched by two losses to the Explorers on Friday and Sunday.
Freshman left-hander Jordan Fulbright (1-0) is scheduled to take the mound for the Bulldogs. The rookie had an impressive debut for the Blue & White last week. He started vs. ETSU last Tuesday and shut down a normally potent Buccaneer attack to earn his first career win. Fulbright limited the Bucs to just one run on five innings and six hits.
Furman enters this week's action with a 7-6 record. The Paladins are coming off a weekend sweep of Marist as they won the final game on Sunday in 11 innings, 10-9.
Lucas Owens continues to lead the Bulldogs in hitting with a .432 average. He's driven in seven runs and has a hit in all 11 games he's started this year. Junior Pete Guy has a .375 with eight RBI's. Guy is 7-of-14 (.500) in the last four games. Joe Zayatz has posted a .364 average with Joe Tietjen hitting .340 and has a team-leading six doubles.
Later in the week, Asheville opens Big South Conference play at Greenwood Field against Charleston Southern. The Bulldogs and Buccaneers start play Friday at 4 p.m., followed by a game on Saturday at 3 p.m. and finishing up Sunday at 1 p.m.
